Did Lucas rape your childhood?

We've now had a year to look back on the completed prequels and it's now time to reassess how much damage Lucas did or did not do to his own reputation and the reputation of Star Wars with the Special Editions and Ep1,2,3.

So what do you think of Star Wars in 2006?

There was no way he was going to out do 4,5,6. i think alot of its to do with the fact that most of us were kids when we first saw s.wars and it made a lasting impression, that the new 3 could never live up to. That being said Ep 1 was poo.

This is the same question as why are today's cartoons rubbish. They are just the same as the old ones except you were watching them then with a different mind set, as big horse said.
To get a real feeling for what these films are like you should really ask a kid. I think episode 1 is the closest to the original trilogy, 2 and 3 got progressively darker as Lucas responded to criticism so where as ep 1 was loved by kids (I know many that were crazy about it) and hated by adults, eps 2 and 3 weren't really loved or hated by anyone.

Episode One isnt that bad, jesus christ ppl make it seem as if its the most unwatchable movie ever made.

It was a good movie, just not a brialliant Star Wars installment.

It was the closest to the original trilogy in many ways tbh. Graphically it was lovely looking, but didnt go over the top. (a la episode 2 and 3 with huge CG space and ground battles, not to mention ever second character being cg ffs) whit many of the effects being made to resemble effect sin the original saga (look at the end explosion of the droid control ship, very much like the destruction of the death star effect)

The storyline was decent, but was made boring by overly long scenes about taxation, senates and other non-interesting dialogue, and overall deadpan acting with the only enthusiastic performance coming from possibly the most annoying character ever created...Jar Jar

I thaught a few key factors destroyed episodes 2 and 3 for me, all the cg characters felt unneccessary, i would have loved to just see a few guys in white plastic outfits for clone troopers (well maybe a bit nicer looking given that its 30 years later) i mean all the cg crap just went over the top. Also 2 and 3 seemed to just destroy that anticipation and excitement at seeing a lightsaber being due to excessive lightsaber usage, it just took away something the original had...ie. that moment where Luke and Vader both draw their lightsabers before their duel.

Personally I enjoyed all three prequels, to the extent I would actually say I almost enjoyed them as much as the original Trilogy.

Episode I, I agree, was not actually as bad as the reputation that precedes it but I think an absence of the entire Gungan race - much like the ewoks in ROTJ - would certainly help out a little.

One aspect I particularly like is the jedi/sith duel scenes in the prequels - nothing worth mentioning in Ep 2 to be honest, but the climatic duel in Ep I and that in Ep III were fantastic and definately in my opinion easily dwarf those in the original movies which so many people hold in high regard, personaly, I have always thought the Luke vs Vader finale confrontation was rather crap and devoid of any real conviction.

In fact now that I think about it, I rather hated Return of the Jedi. It seemed like alot of boring filler with a "Better looking" re-cap of the end of A New Hope. A New Hope will probably always be my favourite movie, then followed by either Episode III or Empire. Jedi would definately be last on my list, probably followed by Ep 2 actually, which I thought was actually the weakest of the prequels.

Now which destruction of the death star effect are you referring to? The original one, or the original original one?

I'm more annoyed at the over-use of CGI in the Special Editions than I am about the prequils. They could have done a nice respectable job of cleaning those up, but they basically just went and sucked a lot of the original magic out of them, imho.

I rather liked them. Well, apart from that crap in Jabbas palace, WTF were they on when they decided that karaoke scene was essential?

But I thought most of the additions were great, in so far as they helped it flow better if you watch from Ep I right through to VI. Kinda funny watching the opening scene in ANH in its original tacky 70's glory and it taking place many years after the cgi laden EpIII.

The prequels just lacked that feeling of timelessness. The story and dialogue was also not very exciting. The cast wasn't all that great. Natalie Portman's acting was just pathetic. Episode 3 was significantly better though. I think the best things in life come when you are constrained by resources and time. When you struggle and improvise, it leads to better and unexpected results, even though you wish you could have done it better. That's how Lucas felt and now that he has done it according to the way he wanted, he has only himself to blame for the lacklustre reviews.

Episodes 4,5,6 were absolutaly amazing!! must be said but also 1,2,3 were amazing too! the digital effects in 1,2,3 really brought star wars to life!! with 4,5,6 u can tell how fake they are and it kinda takes some of the imagination away from them but some of the scenes in the prequal trioloy are unreal for example in return of the sith the saber fight between Anakin and Obi Wan! i was nearly jumping in my seat in the cimema watching that!! AMAZING!! i dnt understand how ppl call the prequals terrible i think they were brilliant and it completes the story so how can it be bad!
