DT288 or DT211

This is a little question that i have wondered about.
Which option would have a better outlook?
Granted the aims serve different purposes, but i wonder.
I understand experiencing both courses is low, as i believe DT288 is more dominent.
I like the idea DT288 offers, but would dt211 offer "enough" programming/scripting, as well as a good balenced Experience of most IT areas(like network administration/engineering?)
Is the CSAA route a good option?
I understand DT288 is aimed at C,C++,SQL,JAVA,ORACLE ect.
I would be led to believe dt211 would be more "scripting langauge" orientated as scripting can be much faster when automating tasks than it would in C, but would be slower and less efficient considering scripting hides memory allocation functions.
Do both courses give a good grounding in these langauges?
Sorry if i am a bit off point, but I am a bit confused:confused: and am certain some of you are getting tired of answering my questions:p

i assume you mean DT228 Computer Science?

erm dt228 would be more dominent as it's a level 8 course opposed to the level 7 of dt211.

the subject lists for the dt228 course is out of date on their website, as they are restructuring the whole computer science course.

a few examples are operating systems and web development from second year are being moved to first year (this years second years still do these subjects though).

if they are restructuring dt228 i can assume (not sure though) that they would restructure dt211.
also from talking to some of this years first years, they seem to have 130 places instead of the 85 listed on the site, they split them into two class groups of 65.

Oh, didnt realise the courses are being overhauled:eek:
I Believe dt211 is level 8, buts lists as level 7 on the cao.

yeh they are trying to make first year a little more difficult, well not difficult but more condense for want of a better word.

there's only one semester of maths too for first years .

Is maths in first year just logic gates, booleen algerbra, discrete maths ect?
Would it be similer to LC maths in any way?
Is UNIX covered in any great detail?

from what i remember maths in first year were as follows:

    Number systems
    Logic
    Sets & Set theory
    Calculus
    Matrices
    Statistics

there's no way they'll fit that all into one semester so i'd say they'll definelately do number systems and matrices after that i don't know... :p

it's different the LC maths, but you shouldn't have a problem if you attend lectures and tutorials (these are vital as you actually are given work to do as opposed to lectures just sit there watching some dude write it on a board).

    Sounds good.
cant wait to finish up school:D
I reckon calculus would be a continuation from LC Calculus.
One semester to cover those 6 subjects!
    Thanks.

    its all completely changed

211 will be building pc's , installing windows and linux, you learn pascal, C, Cobol, SQL, MS SQL, JSP, ASP, Oracle, Java,

maths is a second year subject, as it algorithms

there is a internship program now and it runs college mon-wed, internship thur-fri. the internship is paid at a set rate. only some will be on internship others will do full time college
internship runs during year 3 and 4

in 4th year ( my current year ) we are doing oracle and unix system integrations

    also its Level 8 now

    hey,
im a first year dt228. I can tell u they definitly havnt changed from 85 places cos there were only 65 in our course to begin with and apparently its gone down to 45 now. first semester we do comp arch and tech, programming, web dev, "communications and personal development" (i.e. bull****), business, problem solving.

problem solving, comm and pd and possibly bussiness are gone after semester 1 and then we have operating systems, algorithms, maths as well as the stuff from 1st semester that continue on to semester 2.

Just givin you the lowdown on whats happenin in DT228 this year :)

No idea, but I'd imagine the points for DT228 Computer Science will drop as they have been doing so for the last couple of years afaik.

Sure, everyone and their mother is "heading" to college now that jobs are a rarity. Of course the course points are going to rise in a recession. Simple:pac:

While i hope people will forgive me for bringing up this thread. Since this happens to come up a lot i thought i'd post the answer i found on the actual page for future reference if anyone does a search etc.
DT211 B.Sc. in Computing is a 4 year full-time degree course leading to an Honours B.Sc. in Computing with optional exit points after years two (with a Higher Certificate) or after year three (with an ordinary degree). This is the longest established and most technical of our degree courses. DT211 includes the option of a two-day internship for the final two years of the course. This course also includes instruction leading to the Cisco CCNA qualification and also includes other named technologies including RedHat and Oracle. It is heavily focused on Networking, Operating Systems and Infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on Programming and Databases. Students starting on this course will build a PC in Stage 1 and get valuable hands-on experience using Cisco Networking equipment. Students can get some exemptions if they have previously studied for the ECDL (European Computer Driving License) or have taken any CCNA modules previously.

DT228 BSc in Computer Science is also a 4 year full-time course leading to an Honours BSc in Computer Science. The primary aim of the programme is to produce graduates with the necessary knowledge and skills to perform as ICT practitioners in a broad range of commercial, industrial and public sector environments. Graduates of this programme will be eligible for careers in the ICT industry in such roles as programmers, analysts, system support and administration, database management or any role that involves the design and implementation of software or the management of organizational technology infrastructure. This course features a Work Placement option which allows students to work full-time for a host company for a period of no less than 6 months between February and September of their third year on the course.

It'll make things easier/boring but not required. Up to yourself really. No previous experience required
