First Uni Record is out now.

Looks very clean, professionally put together, and lack of typos. Not bad for a first edition, especially compared with some of the calamities in the past.

    Slightly controversial though:

    - Full page ad for a herbal highs store!

    - Story defending Pope Benedict, which includes a line directed at some muslims "these people don't know the meaning of culture" (eek!)

Is the record run by the SU? As in, is it hack city?
Where do you pick these up? They just lying around campus?

Sweet. Looks like warm nights in front of a nice fire.

Usually you'd pick one up in House 6 before they are trolleyed all over campus.

No, doesn't seem to be as hack city as usual, and the Dep Pres this year is dead on.

There is a picture of Borat on the front page for no apparant reason other than the editor obviously has a thing for it. Not exactly cutting edge news. Just a lot of SU drivel about the redundancies and a few promotional pieces for the Phil.

The Record has been on the slide for the last year or two. Probably about time to bin it and just launch an online news gazette for the Union.

TN do a much better job.

'Whats Cold' includes a piece on there being no page3 girl this year and includes a pic of one. Its not a lads mag, its meant to be a newspaper. Considering it cost a fortune to bring them over last year and only drew a crowd of about 200 its about time that sort of cheap trash ended.

Second what CmcC said. You know, I could almost accept the University Retard being the unofficial mouthpiece for all kinds of SU hackery if it were only done competently. However, all we see is an incompetent half-assed kind of hackery combined with random bull that the editor decides to shove in on a whim. The sooner it dies the better IMHO.

When I wanted to edit the Record I thought it had a lot of potential. I'd have liked to give it a very strong News section (I feel I had that when I edited TN and would have tried to have that with the Record with, if I could have got them, the same news editor as I had at TN though I hadn't approached them about it yet [they were one of the first I approached about TN and had them on board before even going for my TN interview]). If you haev that you get people's attention and then the rest follows through. I also planned a strong features supplement and good sport, music, and cinema sections. It also needed to look better.

I haven't seen this Record yet but hopefully it does well. I think there's a lot to be said for it going a bit mroe tabloidy but not in a girls and nonsense way as it has sometimes veered. More sensational news about bad things going on in college. It's not what I had in mind when I went for the job but I now think it'd probably be the way to go. Leave TN as the paper of record per se and have the Record attack college as well and with a tabloid style in the best sense - serious and edgy. The College Tribune in UCD was very good at that last year. It also looked very good for a student tabloid paper, I think broadsheets normally look better.

There isn't too much in the Record worth reading (and the back page looks like it could be a front page story!), but I have to say I'm surprised at TN not having a paper out in Freshers' Week. Hopefully it won't hurt people signing up to contribute.

We haven't for the last few years, don't really remember any year that there was. We normally start with a week 1 issue as with so many writers it's difficult to coordinate everything together till Freshers Week.

Damn right. First issue of TN out next Tuesday (after Fresher's week). And there can actually be some good reporting in the Record, it's just usually hidden in the inside pages. Bit like the Indo.

Odd, I was sure there was. My bad.

Got the first edition of the Record earlier. I don't want to be too harsh on Simon as it's his first issue and I don't think he's any previous experience, however I'm not impressed. Buttery closing should have been front page story, it's the only one which will interest general student population. World Cup article is about 5, maybe 6 times too long. General layout is not too good, confusing for the reader to follow and text is often far too close to lines in almost all cases. Also far too text heavy with no where near a good enough number of pictures, those that are there often aren't good enough. As I say though a Freshers week issue is hard to coordinate, fair play to him for doing it, and i'm sure things will get better.

I'm disappointed with the Record. The last two years seem to have sucked all the life out of it. Simon talks in his editorial about how it's never as good as Trinity News, and how he wants to get a reaction out of readers by printing more controversial articles (haven't got the text in front of me but that's the gist). That shouldn't be the case - every issue is a chance for a fresh start for it.

The layout needs to be changed; the lack of photographs, the bad use of drop quotes, the lack of bylines for so many articles. More seriously, there needs to be more serious editorial controls put on the articles, and bad articles should be properly edited - the front page article on the SU redundancies read like an (adequate but uninspiring) essay on what happened to the workers rather than a news story. The two page article on the World Cup was out of date and far too long. The promotional stuff for the Phil really was de trop, as CmcC mentioned. It's lazy, shoddy and insulting to treat that as a proper news story.

More should have been made on the JD banning alcohol before 6; the Buttery closing should have been page 1, cos most students didn't know about. I know it's difficult to get letters for the first edition, but surely something could have been rustled together, rather than the two obviously made up ones on the Letters page?

On the positive side, I thought the stuff that Simon himself wrote was great - very readable. One article (can't remember who wrote it) also featured one of the best lines I've read in a while; roughly, "Watching Britney Spears morph from sex kitten to trailer trash is doing the same psychological damage to a generation of men as watching your dad lose in a fight would" :D

Overall though, it's incredibly frustrating reading the Record.

I think it's just at society events and the like.

You thought that Quinn had won by another 17 votes in something else? Was mentioned on the Record thread that TN will be out next week (after my wrong assumption), and it is there to show to potential journalists that this is what we have to offer. And such.

Edit: Oh, that's this thread. See below so!
