Was working fine last night. Tried to turn it on this morning and it wouldnt.

Kept pressing the on button at it would power up for about 3 secs and then shut off.

Eventually it powered up and everything seemed fine.

Went out and left it on stand by. Came back and opened the lid. Sounded like it was starting up but before it did it powered off.

Tried poweing it up again and again it wouldnt power on.

    Any one got any ideas?

    That could be anything. :)

How old is it? Any hardware upgrades recently (especially new ram or anything)?

I would start by taking out the battery and see if it will boot up. Will it boot up when it is physically warm, or will it only boot up if it is cold (just wondering if overheating is a problem here).

If the problem is only occurring when the laptop is put into standby or hibernate, it may actually be a disk problem.

When it is actually on - does it power itself off after a while, or does the problem only occur when you power off/standby/hibernate?

Will it run off the mains or is it when it is plugged in the power issue occurs?

It doesnt turn on with the battery in or out.

Doesnt start from standby or from cold.

If I press the button enough it comes on.

Its on now and working from the battery.

Its working fine when it does start but it takes a long time to turn on.

No hardware updates at all on the pc. Except for external usb stuff.

PC is just over a year old

Had it running for a couple of hours today.

Restarted it to test it and it would reboot

Does any one know of a site where it shows how to take apart the case to have a look inside.

It appears that there is no power or not enough power to power the fan and anything else that is required for start up.

Any one know of a decent pc repair shop in Dublin that would look at laptops?

I have taken laptops apart before and it's realtively straight forward. If you are comfortable with a screw driver and computers in general, I would give it a go. Just remember the golden rule of not forcing anything.

So it sounds like it could be the actual on/off button?

There's a question that comes up regularly. I might just start a sticky on it.

I unscrewed everything and still couldnt get it apart. Didnt want to force anything so left it.

I got my Dad to check the ac adaptor and thats giving the correct voltage so its not that. How would the power button affect it and would you have a solution?

If you can think of one let me know

Hmmmm, grasping at straws here, but I wonder if the laptop got a bang or a drop, would some of the wires going to/from the button have incurred some damage? Or perhaps some other physical connector inside the laptop?

You would need to open it up to check every thing, though.

I know when I was onto HP "technical support" about my laptop some time back, they suggested taking out the battery, disconnecting the power supply and holding the power button for 10-15 seconds. I'm not fully sure what this was supposed to do (discharging?), but give it a go.

I've started a sticky on it, none spring to mind at the moment, I do all my own laptop repairs. :)

Chanced it and tried to power it on and to my surprise it did.

This is confusing. Must be something lose or some thing

OK Dad brought it into work as they use alot of XPS that are similar to the 9300.

A lad there had a quick look and reckons it could be the mother board. He said he'd spend some more time on it later.

If the mother board is gone how much would a new one cost and where would I get my hands on one?

A mate of mine had to replace his mother board and it was expensive and it thats the case I was thinking of breaking up the laptop for parts and selling them on to put towards a new laptop.

What kind of prices could I get for things like

    60gb HD
    1.73GHz centrino
    17inch screen etc

hey ... i have the inspiron 8600 ... had it for a few years now, but pretty much from day one ive had a similar problem. for some reason when i go to power up, the light goes on, and goes off again after about 5 seconds ... and no power.

now, if i wait for the light to go off, and then press and hold the power button straight away, it powers up .... i have no idea why this is, but i kind of got lucky by getting the knack almost straight away, so i didnt bother getting it fixed .... maybe its the same thing perhaps?

Gona try that when I get it back tonight.

As I said it comes on every now and again so this could well be the problem
