Just watched The Illusionist and without giving anything away, you will be pushed to see a better movie this year. Everything from the cast to the cinematography to the story (Period drama) is perfect.:)

I wasn't blown away by this. I think most of my problems came with the ending: I understood what had happened, I didn't need the movie to tell me it again, in a silly "Usual Suspects"-type way.

My other problems came from the fact that I was watching it with an American audience. An American audience who gasped - loudly - at every special effect, which completely jolted me out of the story. Very annoying.

Although speaking of movies about Edwardian magicians, I'm really looking forward to Christopher Nolan's The Prestige which is out in November or so.

Bit of drag up here, but I don't think I have enough to say to start a review thread.
I was pretty unimpressed. Well made, shot, acted...but the story was just ok, and the characters very very flat.

I could have watched this a few months ago on a flight, but it just didn't seem too interesting.
Think it's release that is next week here, can't see myself watching it.

Decent show. Held my attention throughout, I liked Ed Norton in his role. I wouldn't go to see it or again or buy it when it comes out, but definately worth the watch.

It was at best watchable. There was nothing new in it. Its the same old
poor boy, rich girl fall in love, get seperated, he comes back years later and rescues her from tyrannical rich guy
movie, with some magic tricks thrown in! Giamatta was by far the best performance in it, and Biel is always worth watching but the story and "twists" were predictable. It was ok, but i wouldn't advise people to go running off to the cinema to see it

Don't bother. It's strictly a 'watch on dvd when you've got a hangover' film. Watchable, vaguely enjoyable, nothing more.

Sorry but it's HORRID, its a bad movie.

the prestige on the other hand is just fantastic with a unreal cast and a brill story line. It will keep you guessing throughout also.

Oh come on. The Illusionist sucked big time. Edward Norton was on unusually bad form. His accent was horrific. Biel did her job of providing some eye candy and Giamatti was the only one on form. The script was hackneyed and predictable. Anyone who didn't see the ending coming must have been asleep. And as for the magic. Christ, the CGI was rubbish. Overall it was a very poor film. 'The US phenomenon' my arse.

    hey cruc,

was just gone when you posted.

    went to H.F.

a few laughs but nowhere near Shaun of the Dead.

Not helped by the fact that there was a childish young couple next to me who thought they were in there own sitting room and free to talk all the way through the film.

anyway, next time, the illusionist ...
