why dont desktop computers have a hibernate option?

its such a usefull feature on laptops that i would rarely actually shut it down.

the startup is so quick that shutting down seemed like a chore.

is there any way of activating this?
    thanks

AFIAK they do (I'm on a laptop now)

On XP hit the shutdown button on the start menu, then press Standby, and your desktop will go into sleep mode.

no, im not talking about sleep.

im talking about hibernate, another similar option that i have only seen on laptops that does the same thing, but uses the hard drive instead of memory, so the computer is fully off, using no power at all.

is it possible to get this potion on a desktop?

Hibernate is a Windows feature rather than a laptop feature so it's on your desktop aswell (if your mainboard supports it). Have read here:

laptops have had hardware support for resume for a long time to conserve the battery
desktops didn't need to conserve the battery, and besides windows for much of it's history just wasn't stable enough to justify it on desktops - for quick booting in the corporate world you just set the power up time in the bios to 10 minutes before people were due to start.
