Formatting and Partitions??

Only 5 and a half months since my last format I am now faced with doing the job again  Anways, my Skydsl malfunctioned and I find it impossible to re-install the hardware, the one time I did it worked but went haywire again after restarting the PC. I am on XP Home Edition, Dell Dimension 8400 P4 3.4Ghz. My modem is also gone now (I’m stuck on 28.8Kbps dial-up on a 8yr old PC right now) and drivers etc, the whole thing is corrupted and is not shutting down! Dell suggested a Format, which I partially guessed, was the only way out anyway.

I have begun Linux experimentation’s and would like to add a 3rd Partition this time for it. I have two partitions currently 58.5GB and 90.5GB, I was considering reducing the 58.5GB one and taking 20 or 25GB out of it for use with Linux. Would this be a good idea or would the amount of space be too much or too little? I am currently messing about with Knoppix, Astrumi, Ubuntu and Open Suse. (I know this is the PC forum, but my query has multiple questions)

Finally When I do get my pc back the way I like it sometime tomorrow evening; what if any would be the best solution to not having to format again? I have heard of Norton Ghost, but how do they work, I would love to be able to back up the PC at its pristine moment for restoration at a later date. Is Norton Ghost free and if not is there any open source equivalent.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I hate reformating but you got to do what ya gotta do I guess.

http://www.runtime.org/dixml.htm is a free drive image/backup program. Don't know if it's any good or not though. More are listed here.

    Norton Ghost is not free.

20G is plenty of space for a linux installation. You WILL find it frustrating initially and you need to do a lot of reading, but you will learn a lot more about OS's with linux than with windows. I'd suggest installing ubuntu as it is very user friendly (I use it myself). Knoppix is only a livecd afaik.

If you have time to kill, and want to learn about how linux works, try one of the LFS installs (Linux From Scratch....i.e. you build the OS from source code). I learned loads this way, though as a complete noob to linux, you will be just issuing commands without understanding them a lot.

Note that ubuntu is crap without an internet connection. :)

G4U is free and backs things up nicely (though ghost is more user friendly).
