If Raheen Populations grew rapidly in the next number of years, they could/should build a commutr line on the old Foynes Line as it passes through Raheen. Cork and Dublin have one!!!

Yes it makes perfect sence, most of the intrastructure is already there, surely they could build a small platform or station at the Cresent Shopping Centre where the Cement Factory line runs along side. Colbert Station to the Cresent Shopping Centre would take no more than 10 mins by train.

The same could possibly be done with the Parkway Shopping Centre/Childer's Road Retail Park where the Limerick to Ennis line passes close by.

Surely this would take some of the traffic to these shopping centres off the roads.

its possible i suppose like cork got the midleton one recently though that is a fair way out of the city
all the same i seriously dont think there would be enough demand even if the population does increase rapidly

    Exactly.

Firstly, Limerick does not need a commuter rail service such as Raheen-city centre. The population is just too small to ever justify such a construction. While some track may be in existence to make it feasible you have to bear in mind that any commuter service would have to be scheduled to run outside of other trains operating intercity routes, in addition to this it would be too costly to bring up to speed any deriliect track and all for what? Raheen is 3 km from the city. It is well served by bus and is in a fair walking distance. There really is no need for it. I also notice the op mentioned Dublin/Cork having commuter rail, what needs to be remembered is Maynooth-Dublin for example is a 24KM line linking West Dublin and Kildare population to the city centre. Even the light rail options wouldn't be feasible. For example Tallagh has the same population as Limerick City alone and therfore linking that with Dublin is much higher up the priority list than an internal small capcity urban service in Limerick.

Secondly I think this years census, despite the day it was taken etc. will be regarded in any transport decisions, therefore ensuring Limerick will once again be overlooked in some of its infastrucural needs i.e. Shannon rail link
