Just developed my first roll of film...

    ...in 20 years.

I spent an hour yesterday evening loading and unloading a roll of 120 film onto the spool, getting the feel of it again. Finally loaded an exposed roll, and developed it just now in the bathroom. I`d forgotten how amazing it is when you finally take the film out of the developing tank, unrolling and seeing... ...images! Fingers crossed it will still be OK tomorrow morning.

Beats connecting your camera into a usb cable, into a computer and watching the progress bar... Well, OK, I`m going to scan the negs, so I`m going to cheat a little. To have the space for a darkroom!

Nothing quite like the smell of all those poisonous chemicals in the morning :)
And, imo, it will beat hooking up a camera to a pc every time.
Congrats and don't be shy about posting the results.

AH! The smell. Them were the days! But the pain of having to set it all up again. I know...I'm getting old. God invented DIGITAL! :p

Film, what film!! I am way too young to know what you are talking about :D:D

    I certainly hadn't forgotten the smell :)
Checked the film this morning, everything looked fine (I was half expecting the film to have fogged). Then I cut the neg up incorrectly  I cut it into strips of 4 instead of 3, couldn't get the strips into a neg bag. Idiot...

My Epson 4990 was delivered yesterday so I should have some images tonight.

You haven't lived until you stink of developer...

I remember thinking how my slides looked like little jewels, when I unrolled the length of film after doing my first E6. It almost didn't matter if the pictures were any good! It's magic, you can't deny it.

I'm a sucker for the USB convenience these days, though :(

I'll be joining the ranks of you old fogeys soon and doing my first film development on Monday ...

Just started photography at NCAD this week ... first assignment ... shoot 8 good images using Fuji Neopan 400, create workbook and develop ... all within a theme and a 200m radius of one location ... ideas welcome ... but I have few of my own too ...

Yeh, I absolutely love developing my own film! I got knocked off my bike last monday, landed face first and did a good bit of damage, and the biggest annoyance is the fact that we were developing film we shot off last week in the botanic gardens, and I couldn't go into college for it! There's nothing better than watching images appear on a peice of paper as you slosh it around in developer! Gives you such great satisfaction!

Has anyone pin pointed what exactly the chemicals smell of? I think it's Marmite, someone else said chicken soup, and a few said other random stuff, it's wrecking my head!

Always reminds me of strong pi$$. It's the stop bath that smells the worst.

You should have plenty of subject matter around Thomas Street.

I gues you noticed the rest of my class then ... jaysus ... if I knew photography was going to be like that I'd have gotten into it years ago

.. nice to finally meet another boardsie face to face by the way ... even if you were half cut ... keep me posted if the are any outings and I'll pop along to the next one if possible ... though I suspect I'll be out with the camera a hell of a lot just keeping up with my assignments for the course ...

lets try to grab a more civilised coffee if you are free next Thursday... I'm afraid I am a bit past the old college drinking sessions these days :o

Ooh, I'm doing a darkroom beginners course in a few weeks, I'm really looking forward to it. Digital just doesn't appeal to me that much, I've a digital camera and it hardly gets used, although I'm bringing it with me now as a back up. Just something a bit dull about knowing deep down, your pictures are just a bunch of 1's and 0's...

And yes, I'm aware that scanning them and putting them on FLickr is hypocritical
