Well a rehearsal really. Gerry is a friend of mine. A fine songwriter and singer. He asked me to try my hand at this so here you go. C & C's welcome.

Bigger versions available by clicking on them. A few more at my Flickr abode.

I think B&W might work too.

Excellent Valentia, first one is really good, third one I would lose the lights above him. Second one is a good shot but I would crop it. Good work though

These are really really good - surprised these havent had more comments. I think they are technically spot on in terms of focus and exposure and processing but also very good composition wise and the angle too. You framed them very well and got some shots that are definitely publishable.

I liked the 2nd one the most because you really get a sense of the performer being on their own out there. The light around the head and the very long shadow add to the drama of the shot. Also the sloping angle. I like the way you cant tell from the picture if it was shot at a practice with an empty arena in front of him or it it was in front of a full house (I know you said it was a rehearsal - point is from the pic you cant tell) - either way its a great picture and would make a fine print.

PS what iso, aperture and shutter speed were they taken at ?

Thanks lads. In my excitement I rushed these up. I have B&W'd some and put them on Flickr. Sure I may as well stick a few here ;)

Keith. Yeah I might crop it slightly but I like the lights in the other one. It gives that stage feel I think.

Gerald, I used the Canon 50mm 1.8 (all at 1.8)for the close up ones. Taken at 400 ISO and about 350th sec. The 12-24 Sigma was used for the back of the stage ones. Here are a few of the B&W's.

If you are using the "Cloud" skin they will look best against the black (well dark anyway) background.

I have an idea. The very first one, try and burn/dodge some highlights on the rest of the microphone, I had a moment of confusion trying to see what the blob there was.

I like the first set but think the black and white are even better. Nicely done.

Ah, but they shouldn't have to "figure it out" :) The photo should be an effortless experience for the viewer :D

Well done man ,amazing clarity in all of them.
I like them all ,sorry I haven't got any criticism .
For me the contrast makes them ,because they are so clear.

really nice stuff there, what lens ya usin, I'm serously considering a new lens... I discovering the limits of my cheapo ones sadly...they've served me well. I prefer them in colour, its too easy for shots that turn out 'ok' the be converted to b and w to hide that, colour gig shots a a challenge and you did a great job

super shots Valentia -- they reminded me a bit of some Christ Moore photos / posters playing the point , from a few years ago !

The cheapo Canon 50mm 1.8 was used for the close-ups. Deadly lens!! The Sigma 12-24 for the wide anglers. Thanks for the comments folks.
