Apparently this is actually on the way. This time, at least, supposedly featuring some of the original cast including Casper Van Dien who played Johnny Rico in the first movie.

Only real sources to verify this are cincity2000 claiming its in production over at Sony studios, and there is also minor but also what you'd consider reliable confirmation on Van Diens offical site claiming that Johnny Rico is returning, this time as a General of the Mobile Infantry. "The script is along the same line as the first. It is Awesome." - words from the man himself.

Obiligtory flame bait - I thought Starship Troopers 2 was great stuff, a king of B-Movies which is the only way in which it should have been viewed.

Indeed, ST2 was a fairly vomit inducing film.

Well, with acting talent like Casper Van Dien on board, where could the possibly go wrong?

The first film did rather poorly at the box office, it's only recouped alot of that money through good dvd sales...

When it came out though in the cinema I was about...11 I think? I remember watching the trailers and thinking..."wow". I used to stare longingly at the box everytime I went to the video store, as if somehow hoping my parents would let their 11 year old son rent this notoriously hyper-violent movie about giant bugs mutilating earths armies. Alas, never happened, eventually saw it by convincing a friends mother that I "think its rated 12's"....

    Best film ever.

I loved ST, I loved the fact that the movie was not "hiding" any gross stuff, ST2=garbage, pure and simple.

Honestly, I think ST3 will be lacklaster too.

The first one is actually a brilliant political satire. The second is well... nothing really.

not to mention a fair pisstake on the american military PR machine. was years later before i found out that thats how the yanks actually advertise the service to youngsters to get em to join up, hence why they "didnt get it" :D

class film though seems to be doing a bit of a highlander :)

Whats kind of unsettling is its significance to modern warfare:
American marines invading a desert planet (Iraq) fighting low tech opposition and launching bombs down tunnels in the side of caves, while searching for the brain (Sadam) bug.

Starship troopers was a class action, scifi and satirical film and starship troopers wasnt, hopefully if they gte as many of the originals onboard, and a decent budget it could be great, popcorn film at its best.
