Try putting it in a hotpress for a while to dry it out. As for getting the data back that should be pretty easy just remove the hard disk and connect it to another pc.

Wrap it in a towel and keep it in somewhere warm (between the LCD and keyboard), linen or hot press or something and hope for the best. Leave it there for a few hours.
If it still won't come on after that, you can remove the hard drive and I think you can pickup a 2.5" to 3.5" converter so you can plug the drive into a PC to retrieve the data.

The water might be still sitting there, try the hotpress for a while.

if there is no luck, you could try cleaning the tea off the mainboard. I have a link to a good site for saving laptops from spillage.I'll try find it.

[edit]for the future, this is the link. Check out the comments. Some of them give good advice

Folks I have whay appears to be a sony type screensaver coming on now and nothing else, an improvement as the machine wouldnt even go on few days back. Is this an indication that it is on the mend or simply the machine switching on and nothing else. Any help appreciated.
