yer Polish ones in Fair City

I cant believe it would ever come to this but I have started watching and
following Fair city - heck I even watch the repeats!

But the Polish foreign ones in there (the 2 women) - are terrible. So out of
place and terrible actors and its a shame because I want to follow it
properly but as soon as they come on I turn over cause I cant stand their
pigeon English phlemmy pronunciations and wooden acting not being racist its
just that they cant act and are out of place on the soap - I mean what would
it be like to have a Dub star in a polish soap? ;-)

This morning I tuned into Fair ****ty (sorry city) on RTE1 and when yer
Polish Blondie came on and started phleming all over the place I turned over
to Ballanamory on RTE2, actually I quite liked that and the PC bloke was
trying to find out who was littering Ballinamory with suzy pocket (or is it
sweet?) anyway the one in the wheelchair. anyway they found out in the end
it was that daft cow who drives the minibus - she only had a hole in the
bottom of her black dustbin bag didn't she and all the rubbish she put in
the top was coming straight out the bottom - Daft Cow! - anyway the point I
am making is that the Polish woman in Fair City made me turn over to
Ballinamory and I got engrossed in that and then missed the last bit of Fair
City. - I have entered the Fair City competition today by the way to win a
new DELL PC. I think the answer is Blue Dolphin.

I cant wait to see tomorrows episode of Ballinamory :)

    Ta-ta,

    Andy.

beg you Puddin' and apologies to Polish people everywhere. Geography was never a strong point with me. - they still cant act though whatever their nationality.

They are in fact Russian. I think the blonde one married to the taxi bloke is a good actress. She is in fact Russian is real life, so is not putting it on. I also believe her english is quite good, and her character can be quite funny at times.

Its that old one living with Dolores that does my head in, she can't act for sh!te.

I don't get that russian one - sure she's ok looking and she can remember her lines, but you'd swear she was the only good looking woman in Ireland, the way the media fawn all over her. Every mag. produced in Ireland has had a feature on how she's going to take over the world. It's like "Isn't it great, we are such a cosmopolitian country, we have Russian tv stars". If she was Irish, I bet she wouldn't be lauded as much.

Yes she is dire, the one thats got her arm in a sling the old one with dyed black hair thats the one isn't it? - how did she break her arm?. Just watched it when she was waiting in the hotel lobby for her son.

I think there needs to be a new storyline to wipe a few out in that soap something like a plane crashing into Carrickstown - do an emmerdale on it.

I like Ray is it the bald headed mechanic bloke and the woman he lives with they can be quite funny. Some great overacting from that pub bloke who's having the affair with the blond one.

another thing about Fair City - have you ever heard the way all the characters use "Oh?" as a device.

"My scan came back. It's cancer". "Oh?"

"The Baby. It's not yours." "Oh?"

"I have a meeting after work, thats all" "Oh?"

Started off with Barry O'Hanlon doing it, now they all do. It drives me mad!

Whats with all the bloody foreigners in Fair City these days anyway. I counted at least 10 in one espisode alone this week. I know that there is a large influx of migrants into the country of late but come on like its meant to be an "Irish" soap. Looking at it these days you wouldn't know what country its set in. I'm not being racist here by any means, but is it really necessary to have some many foreigners in the soap?

What are others opinion on the matter??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,914 ✭✭✭✭tbh

I think it's a tactic RTE use to make the soap seem more cosmopolitan, and it doesn't really reflect the demographics outside of dublin (in which, of course and in fairness, it's set). I think most people probably know maybe one or two foreigners so it seems strange - I do agree they they seem "shoe-horned" in tho. Helps with story line generation i suppose. I'd say the nordie actors are getting worried, there seems to have been a policy in RTE that wherever there are more than two people in any setting, at least one of them must be from the north:D

I know what you mean, there does not seem to be a very fair balance. I am not being racist but a lot of the foreigners in there are not very good actors anyway - Part of a good actor is not knowing that they are acting, - but a lot of the ones sound like they are just reading direct from the script! and I wonder are they on the minimum wage?

Why do we get some storylines in FC and then all of a sudden they (the actors) all disappear into oblivion? - where is Ken, where is hi dad, where is your one from the garage who didn't want a baby and then did, where is yer one from the garage the old fella who moved into the flat with that woman Ray was it? whats happened to Delores and that old biddy who held her arm and found her son, the fella who's mum runs the shop who stuffed up his date, and mike and his failing restaurant whats happened to that? - where have all those actors and storylines gone to now I haven't seen them for ages.

On the subject of bad acting what kind of acting is that Dominic doing? - have you seen how he cannot seem to say a line without his head or his eyes darting all around the place? - when he is not speaking it seems to keep still but when he is talking he makes me giddy where he cannot keep his head still.

I am beginning to like that Serge fella now, and I like ken (where is he?) and the storyline with Anthony and yer one, and I like Jo apart from that I get fed up with all this honey thing, I would like to see the storyline with the fella locking up Olga getting more intense (I suppose it will).

Its not just the foreigners in it who are rubbish actors. The new guy, who plays Tims nephew, Declan is utterly atrocious. He has to be seen to be believed.

Yeah, I totally agree, I noticed this ages ago. Other examples are the councillor Mannion who had a secret daughter, The developer Seamus Mcaleer and his daughter, Niamh and Paul, Robin and Jimmy and Ray, Carol (Traceys running the pub all by herself now?!), Sarah and Suzanne. None of these characters have been seen in weeks, months in fact.

I also think storylines run for far too long, like the affair between Orla and the smarmy git, which lasted months and months.
The current storyline with the asian boy hanni and his aunt who is looking for custody is just dragging on way too long aswell. Its a boring storyline. Thank God tomorow its finished

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,964 ✭✭✭memphis

Yeah, thats very true. none of the main characters have been seen in it in ages. And I can never ever understand why they spend ages developing a storyline, and then, smash bang boom... its gone and never heard of again. The Robin and Jimmy one is a perfect example as is the Mannion and his daughter storyline another fine example. Fair Sh!tty (sorry I mean City) has been doing this for ages. They drag storylines on for ages, never really give them a serious conclusion as such, and then they have all these foreigners in the show now, with the half of em not being able to act for sh!te. Not being racist here, but I'm only saying whatever one else is thinking, aren't i?

Besides, it would be unfair just to pinpoint the foreighners as being dreadful actors, your man's (married to Olga) nephew is just painful, as is Dominic, and Ken... dreadfuyl dreadful actors. Plus add Mike's woman (Ken's ex-wife) to that list!

Olga is actually played by an Irish actor, Brenda Brooks, and that is not her natural accent - so in fairness I think she's doing a great job. Consider also that she's acting opposite two real Russians - Lana and Sergei, so it must be quite tough to do. I think another Irish actor played a foreigner before, the Brazilian au-pair that McAleer had was also Irish.

As for the acting in general - there are a lot of good actors on Fair City too, but for lots of reasons, they don't come across well. I hate, for instance, the way it is shot, with static camera-positions. Compare this to moving-camera shots you'll see in the British soaps. Two people standing in a conversation at the exact same point outside Phelans, is a prime example. Rarely will we see people walking and talking at the same time and this leads to very static performances.

As for the script-writing - don't get me started. I think the actors are generally doing a good job given the surroundings and conditions they are in. Of course there will be a couple of crap actors too - but I think they're the exception. If you watched the Fair City actors in a better production, I guarantee they'd come across better as actors.

I think the directors and writers need to take some risks to make it better.

...meant to say before. Does anyone recognise Tulayeh(??) - Ramal's mother, as the same actress who played Gita - Sanjay's wife in Eastenders in the 1990s. She was a principal character in Eastenders for years and is now in Fair City :)

Yep I noticed that ages ago, funny how she ended up on Fair City! It was strange seeing the actress who played Madge Bishop in Neighbours appear in Emmerdale a few weeks ago too!

I am really surprised. i see that she was interviewed on Pat Kenny's late show once but had the volume down. I really thought she was Polish/Russian in real life. - Still bad actor/actress though :)

Malachy was a bit of a thespian actor when he was in it. I liked ken, where is he supposed to be now?

Malachy has just finished a big storyline around his affair with Sue and Kay's departure from the series. He will be back in it over the next few weeks, and Ken has been in it regularly for the last couple of months.

Just joined & came across the Fair City Thread... I do watch Fair City & I like most of it... I like the Russian Ones, They are better looking than the Irish ones :-))))

I don't get your man Tim... I think he is brutal.... I don't get his fake northside accent... & he is always the same in every scene.

And when are they getting rid of the Indian Family - their story is painfull. Where is yer womans "Sholah's" accent supposd to be from? Answers on a Postcard Please - RTE Donnybrook, Dublin 4. !

Yes. It's like a bad joke.

She was appalling in Eastenders - 'Ooh Sanjay Ooh Sanjay Ooh Sanjay' seemed to be extent of her vocabulary - and is no better here.

I agree it's got worse lately. I think I mentioned earlier in this thread that I think the producers need to take a few risks.

They should analyse the British soaps and see what elements of them are different (and invariably better) than Fair City and then apply what they've learned, to make FC more watchable. It can be done, it would just take committment and more importantly money, lack of which perhaps, is the root cause of the problem anyway!

I don't know how you can say fair city could learn from english soaps. Sure, sometimes fair city isn't the best but eastenders or emmerdale are just as crap. Overall as an Irish soap I think fair city is fairly good with good actors.
