How to create my own icons in Windows XP?

Was able to create my own icons on my previous machine that used XP (Home Edition I think), but not sure how to do it on my new machine (uses XP Media Center Edition). If I r-click on a folder -> Properties -> Change Icon, it will only allow me to use icons from the shell32.dll library. Any way I can edit my own images so that they can be used as icons in Windows?

Having clicked on customise click the browse button and navigate to the folder containing the icons you want to use

You can change file type icons through the tools->Folder Options menu in any explorer window.

But it is an awful lot easier to get a program designed to do this sort of thing like Stardocks Icon Packager.

png2ico is a very basic tool that can create .ico files from (wait for it) .png files. you have to use it from the command line

you can create a png file or convert a jpeg or whatever in mspaint

the limitations are that the file has to have a width that's a multiple of 8 and less than 256
and the height has to be less than 256.

you use it by typing on the command line png2ico icofile pngfile1 pngfile2

Windows uses files with the .ico extension for icons. The standard size for icons in Windows is 32x32 pixels.

Open mspaint. Tools > Set Image Attributes. Set it to 32x32. Draw as you please.

Now File > Save. Choose a name, and ensure you are saving as "256 Colour Bitmap" - again, the spec for default icons.

Find the saved file in My Pictures or where ever you saved it. We need to change the .bmp to .ico.
Go to Tools > Folder Options in this window. Select the view tab. Find the line that reads "Hide extensions for known file types". Make sure it is unchecked.

Go back to wherever you saved the file, and right click > rename. Change the extension from .bmp to .ico.

And you're done. Just navigate to wherever you saved all your .ico files when you choose "Change Icon". I know this must look like a lot to do, but it's really not, and it becomes much easier after you do your first one, and move on to do more.
