[Beginner] Evening courses, any use?

I've only become interested in image alteration and artwork very recently and have downloaded the GIMP because it's free and is supposed to be okay.

I've started using the GIMP tutorials online and found them useful but I've never done any type of art training before.

Any evening course I've ever seen for digital manipulation (understandably) uses Photoshop. Is there any point in me doing one of these courses just to learn the various techniques involved in photo manipulation?

I realise that I would have to learn how to apply these techniques with the GIMP but does anyone think that it's worthwhile?

I'm not looking to get a qualification, just for my own amusement and something to do.
