Hurling Computer Game On The Way!!!

Hello everybody, a long-time reader, first time poster here. Before pursuing a postgrad in journalism, I studied marketing in college and noticed that one of this site’s surfers added threads that were not just very sensational but that adhered to the principles of retro marketing, a school of thought devised by an eccentric professor by the name of Stephen Browne. So I investigated my hunch and was pretty astounded with the examination’s results.
To get to the point, some of you may have noticed that a username of “Tailteann Games” was posting threads on not only this forum saying that Cork hurlers got food-poisoned and that Eoin Quigley was been linked with Celtic. Within these threads, the line “Bainisteoir – Hurling…Coming Soon” was evident at the very end. So what is Bainsteoir Hurling only a soon-to-be launched Hurling computer game where you take on the role of a county team manager!!! And who are “Tailteann Games” but its designers!! From what I have gathered, each of these posts is in fact a plotline from the computer game, which in true retro marketing style has been “drip-fed” to us, the unsuspecting public in “teaser” fashion!! The magazines/newspapers and journalists that “wrote” the “articles” within the posts are also publications and reporters whom the game-player interacts with in the game!!! The game apparently has the backing of the players, which means that all of the country’s top hurlers are included! I’m over the moon to hear about this as I loved Championship Manager and often wondered would a hurling equivalent ever be created. Exciting times for GAA fans indeed!!

Are you trying to pretend you're not connected?

    Why all the big pretence?

Irish people dont tend to go for this type of nonsense. It comes across more as someone trying to trick people or just plain annoying with these stupid posts about made-up stories.

Far better to come clean from the beginning, and tell us these are the type of story lines that might come-up in the upcoming hurling game we're developing. "teasing" people - NO.

If you're degree is in how to píss off people on as many GAA discussion boards as possible - then you get an A1.

If ever a game is to be created I would not go crazy to endorse it.It was around November last year that we were all going crazy about how farcical the gaelic games football on the ps2 is.I think the developers and the GAA owed more to gamers who really wanted this game by getting in experts and gamers to test the product while it was still in production.Whilst I am not saying it is easy to produce such a game,I feel the game should have been more in the lines of pro evolution soccer in terms of game play and speed.

I wouldn't expect much from a games developer who may feed on this exclusive niche market. We were all fooled once and to quote somebody on this forum I will say this....fooled once, shame on them.Fooled twice, shame on us.

Hurling/Football management games won't work. Why?

Because you can't buy/sell players like you do in FM2006 or CM. That's the key thing to those games. Tactics, buying and selling. Hurling and Football have a limited amount of tactics (in terms of formation).

You might be able to call up players from different clubs though. I can see how that would be fun. :)

That's true. That'd mean a massive massive database though.

hurling and football have a huge amount of tactics to them

short passing, long ball, short puck/kick outs, extra midfielder, extra backs etc etc

Ah, I could be on it. :D:D

Seriously though I cannot see this game being that great to play. The football one was very average, IMO and everyone knows that hurling is a lot more skillful than football (I'm not trying to start a row - its just my belief). And I find it hard to believe that the designers, no matter how hard they try, will be able to get all the skills into the game. They will have to consult some of the top hurlers in the country before completion - maybe they have already done this, I don't know.

Yes but not in comparison to soccer.

    Like: 4-4-2, 4-5-1, 4-3-3, 4-4-1-1, 3-5-2, 3-4-3.

And that's just a few formations without going into the finite details such as Marking, Style of play, tempo etc. For each player.

there are only 11 players on a soccer team

15 on GAA teams, so naturally enough there will be more tactics required

I am not a PS gamer, but does anyone have any opinions about the Playstation GAA football game? Is it worth getting for kids to keep them interested in the sport during those long winter nights, is the game cool, etc?

I know a few kids and all they talk about is soccer and Fifa06, etc, feeds into that interest.

Let me know your thoughts, good, bad or indifferent as I missed the previous discussion about it.

    Thanks,

Very Very Very poor game. If the kids are any used to a soccer PS2 game, they will have no time for the GAA game. Probably one of the poorest games i ever played.
On the other hand i think you could get it very cheap (2nd hand) in Gamestop

I'd agree. I think we were all expecting a proper style game. Much like that of Pro Evo in camera angles and graphics and gameplay. That's what it needs. Instead we got something like Actua Soccer, very poor all round.

The GAA should probabley try and get some new producers for the game. I mean it doesn't look as if it can improve to catch up with the current standard of games. Give it to someone like Konami or a proper game company.

please go let the new hurling game be nothing like that gaa game, pure disappointment that was. remember the crap commentary in that?

just checked the tailteann games site. meant to be a little similar to championship manager. meant to have loads of detail. hoping for the best.

Exactly what i was thinking. The whole point of these games are buying the Ronaldinho`s and the Rooney`s (and Ian Harte`s) but without transfers its a bit pointless. Also, in the link there, Croker is a fully seated stadium....you trying to make a point there??!?!! :D

Is there a facility to swear and spit during the team-talk...

'As for the full forward, go out there and break his f*****g legs!'...

    etc. etc.

'And don't forget lads, enjoy yourselves...'

If they do decide to make a hurling game, it should be optimised for the nintendo wii. I'd say it would be largely successfull considering you could solo run, hop and hit the ball all using life-like motion on the wiimote. Pressing buttons to accomplish any of these skills just isnt the same. Calling up players from different clubs would be an excellent idea, but it still wont put the likes of Laois in the same boat as Kilkenny (unless they make James Young untouchable and give Shef a handicap). Online features would be the way to go, play your mates indoors and out of the rain and snow during those winter months before the League kicks off.

fair enough on the transfer thing. but ye all know that in todays world of intercounty manager there is loads that they have to look at before the big match. the game is meant to given you the ability on how to train the team, what their diets will be like etc and balance the budgetof running such a team, given realism. so their sound be a lot to do in the game. particularily a good challenge to get a team like antrim or other weaker counties to win liam. basically the gaa hardcore will appreciate the game for what it will be, who knows def cant wait to get my hands on it
