I'm sorry but I don't have a solution. When my connection was saying "acquiring network address" as yours was it either meant I didn't have access to the network that the computer was on or the network was down.

Is yours connected to a network or are you going direct through an ISP?

Do you by any chance have a static ip address??? What isp are you with???
Example this happened me when i first got broadband because I had not inputted my ip address, dns etc in tcp/ip config....
If you go to control panel-network connection and go properties on your lan connection and go into internet protocol(tcp/ip) it is probably set to obtain everything automatically but maybe with your isp like mine you have to input these details manually,

Perhaps the DHCP server on the router / modem got switched off. Have you power cycled the modem / router yet?

One major question(more could follow depending on the answer):
Have you ever been able to get onto the internet from this machine?
    What made you install SP2?
Can you open up a command prompt and try to ping 127.0.0.1? What is the response?
Are there any errors in the event log?

May be worth following the advice here also:

Why are you trying to start the DHCP service on the inspiron if your router is doing it?

Did you try run the set up network windows wizard and click the option "This computer connects to the internet through another computer or residental gateway"?

    Cheers For the reply TheTinker...
I installed sp2 as i thought this might cure issue.. This is a friends Laptop so i dont know if they used it on Broadband Before.. It works fine on Dial Up..

    When i ping 127.0.0.1 it works fine - i get a TTL of 128

I went through them links and all is fine there...

The event log is showing error from matlabserver.. I ran a checl on this on Microsoft Site and got nothing.....

The error reads as follows "The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( matlabserver ) cannot be found.
The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages
from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and
Support for details. The following information is part of the event: matlabserver error: 0, Engine wait timeout 180
    reached for instance 0.

Also in the device Manager under the Non Plug and Play Drivers . There is yellow icon on SYMTDI - Can i i stall this again from Windows CD....

    cHEERS FOR HELP
    .

    Hi,
Hmm, There seems to be a fair bit of software on the machine which isnt too common.
Did you check to see if the software was compatable with SP2 before you installed it?
Can you uninstall the SP2, then see if the DHCP service is working-if all is working, check to see if the apps are compatable with SP2, if they are reinstall the SP again.
Could be a corrupt install or an app causing the issue, rolling back will ensure that you know whether the service worked before SP2.

The same prob was happening prior to SP2 going on....
Taking off SYMTDI as thought this might be a previous error with an install of norton... Still to no avail though:confused:

That is the problem, the DHCP service is not running so your computer is not sending/receiving DHCP requests. You can get around the problem by setting a static IP for yourself. If all the computers on your network use:
192.168.0.y then go to Network Connections, right click on the one for your Ethernet card and select properties. Click TCP/IP and click properties. Click Alternate Configuration tab and tick the button that lets you manualy specfy an alternate IP configuration. Enter the following:
192.168.0.y for your IP, 192.168.0.z for your gateway and DNS server where z is the IP of your gateway and y is an unused address on your network.

    Also, take a look here:
    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/dhcp.htm

    As for your DHCP problem

Trust Norton to muck things up.
Glad you came to a solution anyway mickymc
