    Hi,

anyone here done a beginners course in digital photography? Any recomendations? I'd like a course that doesn't spent a lot of time in Photoshop but rather focuses on the camera and image taking.

    Cheers,

    K

There's this course, i'm gona be doing it, but on improvers, although registration may be over for you, since it starts today and tomorrow, have a look anyway.http://www.digitalbeginners.ie/digitalbeginnersnight.htm

But i'm on the look for a proper certificate course i could do, part time or weekly that'll really help and challenge. Anyone have any suggestions?

Steer clear of ICS. Waste of money. The course material is badly photocopied and everything included can be learned from the net. Rubbish tasks and when you get to the end it's clear it's all film based, i.e. "attach your negative here".

I have to say the internet is probably the best place to learn. Because people will be able to look at what you're producing and give you direct feedback. I've found http://www.stevesforums.com/forums/ to be very good, and helpful. They usually guage what level your at and tell you where to go from there.

Also, don't worry about cameras. The technical basics are very, very easy to understand. And it's those easy basics that control the look of the shot. After that you're just left with composition, which again has some basic but easy rules. And of course, best of all, you're shooting digital so you don't have to worry about development costs.

Go crazy with the camera, shoot anything and everything and then see what works. I know some people like to keep a notebook of the settings they used, as it works better for your memory than any exif data will.

All of this will give you a good base. And once you have that you'll know what to look for and where to go. Photoshop is a different kettle of fish, but again teh interwab is stuffed full of tutorials.

I'm also doing a course by Digital Beginners but doing it over a weekend instead as its easier for me being in Galway.

To answer your other question, I am in a similar position as yourself regarding doing a decent course but every one that is offered that I looked into does not just focus on digital format only. Processing film in dark room etc is of no interest to me. This is my personal preference only (& I wait the backlash).

I'm doing a course in a couple of weeks in templebar ,it's basically short course on camera use and composition and how to use the camera creatively.
I have to say the place looks amazing ,it's like a library but with only photography books. It's in Meeting square in templebar.

haha, i actually just walked in there today, i've decided to switch to that place instead, same price, but has much more benefits such as a dark room for hire and cheaper film development. Also if you're a member, you get invited to exhibition receptions, i'm guessing those be artistic parties/piss ups?

I was thinking of joining myself ,if anything it would be great to pop in every now and again for some inspiration.
    Good luck with the course

Haha, i've already been talked out of this course before i started it, i guess from my bro's point of view. I'm back to square one...
Em, so anyone know of any courses that are focused on taking the image, not the part after that. Cause i can learn photoshop and that no bother, technique is what i wana learn.
