    Laois get their man
    26 September 2006

Laois football board chairman Joe O’Dwyer is convinced that Liam Kearns is the right man to build on the work carried out by Mick O’Dwyer over the past four years.

Tralee man Kearns, whose mother is from Laois, was unveiled as O’Dwyer’s successor on Monday night, September 25. He previously managed Limerick for six years and helped to raise the county’s profile in that time.

    “I am happy,” O’Dwyer said.

“I do believe Liam Kearns will complement what Micko did here in Laois and that he can bring us forward.

“We want to build on the foundation that Micko left over the four years he was here – he did a tremendous job.

“And I think we’ve found that Liam is a very progressive thinking sort of a lad and can continue that on.

“I was very keen to get Liam in here. Liam has a great reputation, tremendous calibre and the clubs have also decided that. We’ll finalise his selectors over the next few weeks.”

This is a good apointment for Laois, as I feel an internal appointment would have been disastrous, as the players wouldnt respect them.
Kearns has done well with Limerick and hopefuly will provide something different for Laois and help us progress that extra step.

Fox is new Laois hurling boss
    26 September 2006

Tullamore man Damien Fox has been appointed as the new Laois hurling manager in succession to Dinny Cahill.

Fox was a surprise choice as Tommy Buggy, who guided the Carlow minors to their first ever Leinster final appearance earlier this year, had been the hot tip to replace the Tipperary man, who was axed after just one season in charge.

Local names such as Joe Dollard, Sean Plunkett, PJ Cuddy, John Taylor and Mick Dempsey had also been linked with the job, but it has instead gone to Fox, who managed Portlaoise to a SHC success two years ago when they stopped Castletown’s bid for a sixth consecutive title.

The O’Moore County managed just one competitive win in 2006 (the All-Ireland qualifier against Westmeath) and Fox faces an unenviable task in turning their fortunes around.

This is a strange appointment, but he cant do much worse than Cahill did last year right?:(

Well when Laois were under Butler, they were competitive but this year they were awful (no need to be telling you this, you probably know it already) Fox has his work cut out for him alright, but with the way the Leinster championship is at the moment if Laois were prepared well they would have as much chance of getting to the final as any of others (excluding KK obviously).

As you said, it couldn't have gotten much worse.

I think of the managers that were in the running, Kearns is the best choice.
Pat Roe is a decent manager but i think an outsider will gain more respect from the players. There's always some resentment from some quarters when the manager is a native.
