Whats the deal with employment agencys

I applied for a job through a recruitment agency and have been called for an Interview. I am currently employed in a permanent position in a company but I am looking for a change. Whats the story with recruitment agencys? I understand that if I get a job from them, that I am employed by them, but will I be permanent or will I only be on a fixed term contract? I should of said that the position I am going for the interview is stated as permanent, but does this mean i'll be permanently employed by the Recruitment agency (i.e. they will get me another job after this one) or that I will be always employed with the company I am going to be interviewed by?

Also, What are my chances of promtion when working for a comapny in these circumstances? What are my chances of getting a wage increase? Is there anything else I should know or be aware of?

Thanks for any advice that will be given

Well you should ask the agency. I think the two scenarios are:

1)You are working for the agency. They pay you (usually an hourly rate) and decide when to give you a raise. Generally these aren't permanent roles.

    or

    2) The agency was hired by the company to find someone for the role. If you get the job, the agency get a finders fee and that's the last you hear from them. The company, not the agency, pay you.

    So, from you're post, I'm assuming it's no 2.

I asjed the agency and they said that I would be employed and paid by them but I would work for the company? Is it possible to succeed with a company (i.e promotion, wage rises, etc) with this setup? Have you ever heard of a person working permanently in a company but been employed by an agency?

You will be a wageslave for CPL or the likes. You aren't working for the company, you are working for the agency to which the company outsorced some business. Also, usually they have clauses in the contracts stating that if they lose the business you are out the door.

Dont do it man....whatever the story is with the company you work for now and havin the interview with the agency....stick with the company for now and look for a job thats not agency dependant....apply to companies directly....im one of those CPL wageslaves....employed by them and my contract ends in January but im two months into this and im thinkin a leavin the company....purely because of the agency end of it.....chances are the contract is a fixed term contract.....max 11months or so.....after that your out on ur ear....and the contract is really s h i t e....they can let you go for days without pay as they decide.....the chance of wage rise are nil with them....its an ordeal if ya simply want to take a few days off.....and remember they are getting a cut of your wages....in some cases up to 5 or 6 euro p/h....:):):)....Best of luck with your choice :):):)

Thanks for all you replys. I dont think I am going to go to the interview now. It is CPL who are the agency and what you have told me is what I was fearing. I dont wanna work in those conditions.

Go for the interview - what harm can possibly come of it?
If you're offered a job, wait for the contract then make a decision.

Worst that can happen is you get some interview experience.

Plus, there's the fact that after a while, the company may take you on full time with a fat pay rise for your troubles. No harm testing the water.

Of course that is the other side of the coin.....it would be interesting to see what kind of a s h i t e contract they root out for you :).....as regards the interview it would typically be a put a face to the name one...nothing formal or difficult....where is the interview for anyway??? Big industries like to get agencys to hire people...that way the company can use and abuse the system and fire you without any notice as they like :):)
