Just wondering is it possible to get an external case to houe PCIe cards as you would a harddrive? Or if not, what alternatives is there other than changing motherboards to one with more PCI-e slots?

    Thanks

Don't think it is possible at the moment, though a few articles I read suggest it may be possible in the future (I think they are working on it). Not sure what alternatives you have if any.

PCIe slots in an external cage are not something the home market has access to think big iron server/workstations, that would be the best place to look in.

Edit: Here is an example of such an expansion system, they often cost up to thousands of dollars.

The closest thing to that is the express card slot which is a PCIe x1 slot for laptops.

What requires so many PCIe slots ?

The only alternative would be if a USB version of the card you want is available.

Also possibly legacy (PCI) cards if you have one of those slots free.

I doubt you will get many solutions more cost effective than a 130-150 mobo upgrade.
