How to reduce overscan?

I recently replaced by tv with a Philips 26" lcd. I'm very happy with it except that it doesn't seem to handle NTSC too well. It overscans excessively, resulting in alot of the picture being cropped. As I own alot of R1 dvds this is a problem.

I've emailed Philips and am waiting to see what they have to say about this but in the meantime I'm thinking about other ways to get around this issue.

Overscan has always annoyed me, even when it's minimal. Rarely are films transfered to dvd without some of the original aspect ratio being slightly cropped. Then you have dvd player and televison overscan taking away even more of the picture. So by the time you sit down to watch the film, its original aspect ratio of 2.35:1 is starting to more closely resemble 2.15:1. I have an interest in photography so not being able to see the director's original composition annoys me.

Of course you can mess around with your tv's service menu. But its not a good idea since televisions need a little overscan to function properly and hide any video noise.

I have heard of dvd players that can "zoom out" and effectively eliminate overscan. Does anyone know of a current dvd player which has this feature? I've found several with google but they don't seem to be available in Ireland.
