I have 2 new houses to decorate. They will be finished construction soon. Has anyone travelled over to the UK to buy furniture? Is it worth going over? I have pretty much everything to buy for both houses. I heard that there will be an IKEA opening in Dublin soon. Has anyone heard anything about this? Also do they deliver to Ireland if i ordered online?

some news in relation to IKEA in Ireland here
    http://www.furniture.ie/news/idx/6/0/IKEA.html

They were meant to open in Belfast towards the end of this Year and in Ireland next year.

You can get IKEA to delivery to an Irish address.

    Thanks,
    Richard

AFAIK u can order online from Edinb and Glasgow only.

Anyway u need to see/touch the stuff.

However do ensure that the stuff is in stock before u go

I do a lot of work with IKEA stuff and while u will be critcised by some, the thing I like is that there is no waiting for 8 12 weeks to be then told that they only have it in some sh1t color.
    In Ikea WYSIWYG

If doing ikea kitchen search this forum for some good advice

you can get the edinburgh store to deliver to ireland.

but having just bought and decorated a house, i kept them as an option throughout the process but was never overly thrilled by their prices compared with some clever shopping around the dublin/kildare area.

I'm going tomorrow. The quality of a lot of IKEA furniture is ok. I'm going for things like beds for the 3rd & 4th bedrooms. They'll be used at most 3 or 4 times a year and it would be silly to spend the 2k I spent on our own bed for that? If you see the stuff in the store & put it together properly everything is fine.

Ikea sell candles and accessories cheaply (6 for £1) shoppers are then under the illusion that everything is cheap. If you shop around here in Ireland you would get equilivant quality just as cheap.

It should be about getting value for your money.

Is IKEA still on track in opening the Belfast store in Dec this year? I was planning to travel at the end of Oct, but if its opening this year I will wait and save on the ferry costs.

    Anyone in the know?

richard, I like the styling of IKEA. I've looked around in Ireland. For trendy furniture I've found you pay a premium but I agree it is possible to get better value in the more old=fashioned stuff.

I agree with you on that one, IKEA win with design.

I was looking into this last week and found a couple of news items which stated that the Belfast opening had been delayed to next spring.

When I bought my furntiture from Ikea last year it was definitely cheaper than anything available around Dublin, and I'm delighted with the quality. Their beds would be their weakest product for me - not sturdy enough for use as a main bed, but as guest beds they're perfect. The 2 sofas I got from them are excellent quality for far less than equivalent quality here would cost.

I really like their design and found plenty of good quality options for most things. For example, a solid oak dining table that can be set to seat 6, 8, or 10 people and has a nice chunky look was only £180.

They do have fantastic prices on lighting and shelving too - that's two areas where they really wipe the floor with the competition.

I've just furnished most of my apartment with Ikea stuff. If you don't want anything too fancy or long-lasting (ie. for a holiday home, or guest rooms), then Ikea is great. I found it wasn't actually as cheap as I'd expected though. My greatest problem with it was summoning the energy to assemble everything. My closet still only has one door (we're having a mexican standoff right now).

However, I am in Edinburgh so I just went out to the store. I believe my neighbour back home in Cork is a big fan of ordering online though, so it is possible, but only from the Edinburgh and/or Glasgow stores.

Before ordering any IKEA products from the UK you should consider buying in France instead.A lot of their products are cheaper there. I recently bought a MYSINGE sofa for a house in France, cost 312 euros there, nearly 100 euros less than the UK price. I ordered a lot of other items also online from Ireland and everything was delivered to the French address. There was a small mix up with the order but I only paid for what was delivered. I was also pleasantly surprised how well everything was so easy to assemble, no screws missing, allan keys supplied etc and I had a sofa, table, chairs, a sideboard, lamps etc .Only drawback is that the online service from the French site is for delivery in France only. Hire a van and take the ferry? You can check the prices on the French website.

I'm a 10 min drive from our nearest IKEA in the uk, we plan to buy a bit of stuff there when we move home and the house is built, some of their things are good quality, some are on the light/cheap side (like argos really)
I'd not bother with the beds and sheets are they are slightly different sizes, we'll get thek itchen there, its great value and I'm not really into spending many € on a kitchen and feel i have to live with it for 30 years to get my value for it. THe chunky units ie. bookcases are great some of the lighter ones are a bit cheaper.
The little accessories and bathroom mirrors etc are great value, the only thing I'm a bit wary of is at the minute they'll be different but once they come to ireland will every home have them??? You'd be amazed at the amount of TV programs who shop in Ikea, most of the Creche's here seem to be kitted out from there too.
I'd book a cheap flight over for a look first before you decide nad prob order from the glasgow store and get them to deliver.

Excuse the bump of the old thread please... but I was just wondering if there was any more news about Ikea in Belfast? Nothing on their website.... I guess the Ballymun store could be opening around the same time as the Belfast one?
