Your chance to have your say:

This is quick and easy to do . . . if you feel so inclined! Note: the closing date is Sept 30th

The Government wants to know what you think they should do about climate change. Friends of the Earth wants your help to press for real action before it’s too late to prevent climate chaos. You can have your say in a matter of minutes by making an online submission at www.climatepledge.ie.

Ireland’s climate pollution has risen by almost twice the amount allowed under the Kyoto Protocol. Now the Government is saying it will develop a new Climate Change Strategy and they have invited the public to make suggestions until the 30th September. You can make a submission right here, right now at www.climatepledge.ie. Every voice counts. Every submission pushs the Government to take climate change seriously.

    STOP CLIMATE CHAOS
You can have your say and play your part right now at www.climatepledge.ie

Not an appropriate post in Politics. Mods, deal with as appropriate.

It's a little high-handed to switch this to Green Issues from Politics - this is a submission to the Government, after all!

    A few general ideas:
    - Maybe they could close the hole in the law which allows people to tax their 3L fuel-guzzling 4x4 as a commercial vehicle when its mostly used for school runs and doing the shopping
    - Maybe class solar cells (thermal and voltaic), and wind turbines as fuel and charge them at 13.5% VAT (same as ESB, Home heating oil etc) instead of 21% (Guess what the grant covers on an average solar thermal installation - you got it, the VAT)
    - Maybe a farmer who goes to the pub in his John Deere on a friday night shouldn't be allowed to do so at 30c/litre for the green diesel and €78 road tax.

Gurgle, these are excellent - but don't tell us, tell our government.

I'd suggest school buses - the American kind, that travel around every city picking up kids for school and dropping them home or to creche after school. That would get a huge number of cars off the road.

I'd suggest a Dublin Underground - we're unusual among European cities in not having one; even Venice is starting to build a metro, for Pete's sake! And I've heard that the guy who designed the beautiful Barcelona metro said he could build a Dublin Underground for the same price as the two Luas lines cost, and in the same time or sherter.

I'd suggest that the installation of things like geotherman and solar panels and windmills should not be limited to government-approved installers (who then jack up the price) but should be stringently inspected, and well funded on proof that they work.

    Added my voice.

I've submitted a proposal for all new apartment blocks must be built with green energy provision, ie, solar panels/wind turbines for communal areas and full recycling facilities.

it should also be made much easier for owners/tenants in estates/blocks controlled by management companies to 'green' their owns by adding solar panels etc.

Are there more apartments or houses being built?

Maybe, but that's my call to make, and I discussed it with the other Politics mods (and one admin) before doing it.

I don't want to set a precedent that allows the Politics forum to be used for random announcements with vaguely political aspects.

Great idea, have made a submission.

Check out this article from the site: http://www.climatepledge.ie/campaignnews/index/20060923174637.html

    Fascinating stuff.
