I have noticed recently that my speedo for my Honda varadero 125 isnt working properly. It works fine some of the time but other times it jumps around. eg. doing about 60Km/h it will jump to about 85 and back to 60 and so on. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? i havnt had time to check it out myself.

Prob just the spedo cable, take it off (its easy, just remove the screw connecting ot to the wheel and twist off from the top) and check the condition of the cable, try pull the cable forward through the line and then connect it back to the bike. Test it now.

If the cable is damaged, buy another cable there pretty cheap, otherwise the spedo itself needs to be looked at.

I remember reading up that some analogue speedos work with a magnet at the end of the speedo cable.
The cable spins at the wheel, the magnet spins in the back of the speedo. The magnet activates another magnet which turns the dial arm around against the force of a spring.

Where the swaying back and forth occurs, is the "link" between the two magnetic fields and the tension in the spring.

The one on my Enfield ranges between 60 and 100kmph when I am moving at I guess 80. It started out fine and works better sometimes than others.

I just drive it on "mean" speedo reading :)

Don't think there is a fix as such, but a solution could be to buy a cateye bicycle speedometer and affix that to the bike. You may need a small light to see the speed in the dark.

    Thanks for all the comments!
I finally got around to stripping down the bike and having a good look. There wasnt much i could do at the front wheel end because the cable is sealed, under the tank where the cable connects to the main wiring loom had a bit of corrosion which i cleaned and refitted. However i did notice where the wiring loom connects to the 'dash', after i took off the connecter, there were two pins shorter than the rest as if broken off. I opened up the speedo and these pins dont connect directly to the speedo but may be earth wires.
Since there was nothing i could do with that i put everything back together and its better but still not perfect. It still happens the odd time but now only varies by about 5 km/h...which i can live with!

Thank you all for the help!
    Safe riding

the same thing happened on my varadero. i had to get my tyres changed around the same time it happened.i got the tyres changed and when he hooked everything back up it was fixed. so i think the problem is with one of the cables near your front wheel rather than directly behind the dashboard. try fiddling around with the cables and make sure everything is tight and fitting correctly.
