    The most popular explanation is that it comes from leetspeek beginning as an accronym for "We Owned Other Team" or "We Own Other Teams" and now is most commonly used as a expression of delight/excitement.

    The oldest references are from '94 [nearly positive] I haven't got them with me but I can check if you're interested.
