Ok, so I'm an idiot in need of urgent help.

During a cleanout of my external HDD, I deleted 2 huge .rar files that I shouldn't have, and emptied the recycle bin immediately thereafter. Is there any way I can get these files back without paying extortionate fees to a data recovery company? I'm running Windows XP Home, in case that's relevant.

Yeh its possible to recover them no bother once you don't use the drive. Don't do anything with the drive as the files are still there but if you move files or put stuff on to the hard drive they can take up the space that the files you lost are on. theres a good few programs out there you can use, most of em you have to pay for (they'll show you the files you lost but before they recover them you have to pay) but there are a few that give free full trials. have a look on google for one. the main thing is just not to use the external drive in the mean time and it should be gravy

I've used RTools myself, not free but one of the best out there, especially with feck-ups on proprietry disk-spanning external units that don't conform to any known RAID standard.

    Thanks for the help guys.

I tried out the pcinspector software last night, it hung once or twice so I'll have to try again today. It looks promising though. Scary times!

    Guys,

thanks for all the help so far. I've recovered my 2GB .rar file. Unfortunately WinRAR is giving me an "Unexpected end of archive" error so I can't access most of the precious info in the archive. Does anyone have any hints on how I can get around this, maybe an alternative to WinRAR that could manage to open the entire archive? Thanks.
