    Question the first:

When would you like another one? I think Dave has a Super Fun Happy Team Tournament tentatively scheduled for early Dec.

    Question the second;
I was considering how we divide novice/inter/advanced for larger tournies. Currently it's done by time training, but we all know this isn't as ideal as we could have it. I was considering this:
    • If you place in Novice, you can no longer compete as a novice, you move to intermediate.
    • If you place twice in Inter, or take gold once, you move up to Advanced
    • If you take gold at advanced, we buy you a Moro.
This could help to ensure competitors are more evenly matched. Of course, if you want, you can enter into a higher division than one you've "won the right " to compete in. Thoughts on this?

    Question the third:
Bonus medals and awards: Would you like to see them? What for? I'm thinking of the the Jamie McInerney Award for Outstanding Performance.

    Question the Fourth:
Any rules/regulation changes you'd like to see?

    Thanks guys,
    Colm

on this i would suggest introducing points at some stage in the round. for example if its a 5min rd then let the first 3 minutes go with no points and then in min 4 and 5 points count.

if someone is going to get a sub they'll probably get it within the first 3mins anyway and if they are not at least they'll win the match through superior positioning. there was A LOT of matches going the distance and it drags the day out having to redo pools, first to takedown etc

other than that great day, very well run and looking forward to the next one

Gotta agree completey with this. No points means people go for subs more is a nice theory, but doesn't really work out. Points in the last two minutes would keep the action going and stop people fighting "not to lose".

Yes, I would agree points are good. I drew 2 fights, I think 1 I would have won easily on points but the other, I would have abandoned my "don't lose philosophy" and in the final stages try to gather some points. Thus making the bout more active and increasing changes of a submission. So points are good, because they reduce the number of draws, and reward people that dominate their opponent but fail to finish.
Points are bad because they encourage people like me to play a points game.

To seperate competitors based on standard will be more tricky. Certainly, if we have numerous events per year, you can say every 3 tournaments you have to move up a category (I hope this wouldn't discourage people from competing, if they worry about loosing out on their novice position). Lenght of time training is a bit ambigious because it could be argued that I've been grappling for 5 years but certainly wouldn't be at the standard of someone doing BJJ 5 years 3/4 times a week. So should I still go in the most advanced division despite me knowing I'm not at that standard purely based on start date? It's similar to if I get a blackbelt in judo, should I go in the purple belt division of the BJJ open (I think I read this somewhere), of course not, I know I'm not at that standard, but are we expected to follow rules like this as guidelines or to the letter?

Certainly anything blue belt standard or above should be in the most advanced group despite number of months training but trying to split again between beginner and pre-blue belt is difficult.

An idea might be to make a points win less valuable than a submission win e.g. Submission win = 3 points, Points win = 2 points, Draw = 1 point, Loss = 0 points. This would overcome some of the problems of the current format but still incentivise submissions.

There is an opportunity here for motivated, interested people to put a system in place while the sport of submission wrestling in Ireland is still in its infancy.

Firstly, I'd like to see a season. September to May would seem good as we don't have to worry about weather. What that essentially means is that there would be no formal tournies in the summer which would be likely to be poorly attended anyway.

Secondly, with attendances like yesterday, the kids will soon outgrow a morning section and demand a junior tournie of their own. I've had tournament problems with my kids (looooong story) for a while but parents are sensing a bit of a change. With the way things went yesterday I should have more and more kids coming in. Add that to the big representation from Colm's, Andy's, Owen's and hopefully a few more.... I think you have a junior tournament

Thirdly, I agree with the points idea. You know yourself, once you get bollixed and slippy the subs become rare.

I like the placing of the NSC in May, and I wouldn't mind competing in another before that, though maybe a few local, smaller tournaments might be the way to go.

Lastly, a team sub tournie might well be attended by a K.O. Martial Arts team this time out, aka "cannon fodder inc"!:)

    That's a good idea.

    Hi Colm,

I didn't make this years event but heard it was great, so well done.

I agree with JK and Clive re:points and I have to admit that Roper's idea of continuous competition or occassional tournaments during the autumn/winter and spring months is a smart move.

Firstly it'll give us something to aim for while the weather is bad ;)
But also, since most tournaments are like holidays [summertime] it makes alot of sense...

I really like the idea of the special categories awards.
Sometimes you can encourage kids with golds we know that but for those who put in a great performance but don't place it might keep them interested and motivate them further....also I am pretty ropie at submissions and I think i would like a special award or trying...I am 27 years young!!!

Really good idea, I always thought thats the way it should be. Although a snickers would be more fitting.

I was hoping to be in the intermediate division this time but since there was only two divs, I was in novice. It didn't really matter because I got subbed anyway!

By the way, first time seeing JK roll. Bleedin amazing and it was eerily similar to the 'westside tourney' featuring genki sudo. Anyone see the jump triangle while his opponent was on his butt? Sweet.

Thanks for the reponses so far guys.

We'll run another tournie in late Feb - that'll give you 6-8 weeks to burn off the mince pies from Christmas. Name and slogan to be decided.

Nationals, last weekend in April/early May.

The Novice/Inter/Advanced largely stolen from rowing.

Kids tournament will probably become a separate event. Include some games as well.

I don't like the idea of points, but meditate on this I shall.

Burn off? Surely you mean eat more so we can all bulk up to +92?
