Hi i have applied for and been accepted for the SEI grant for an OPOP SCOTTE wood pellet boiler , all i need now is to find a plumber to connect the pipework and install it , at the moment i have a solid fuel back boiler , the distance from the present circulation pump to where i want the new boiler installed is approx 8 meters , now i have had quotes from 2 plumbers ,one for 2500 EUROS and another for 1000 euros , now my questions are does anyone know how much it should cost approx , and if i got a plumber i know (not on the sei list) to install the pipework only , would i still be entitled to the grant ?

    Hi,

Do you have a breakdown of the installation prices you have at the moment ?

The reason I ask is one does not appear to include the twin skin insulated flue which with the necessary accessories can cost in the order of €1,000.00 on it's own for around 2.5 metres from the boiler.

The installer registration system is so simple there should be no reason why a plumber should not be on the SEI list.

Are you supplying all of the flue and the pipe, fittings, pump etc ?

With the distance of 8 metres perhaps the second price is including insulated underground pipe, fittings and the flue so the price may not be as expensive as it first appears.

I have found a simple solution to pricing is ask for seperate labour and parts prices. (and get a detailed list of parts being charged for) Otherwise, get a price for labour only, and buy the parts yourself if you have contacts - or even order plumbing and heating fittings on the Internet from UK or Germany at way cheaper prices, if you know what you are doing. I got a thermostatic shower mixer from Germany for €60 - the asking price in Ireland is €200!!

The hourly labour charge for installing a wood pellet boiler should not be any different from that of installing an oil boiler or a back boiler. Get an hourly rate.

My plumber, who I have for years, charges my about €35 an hour. But there are plumbers and installer out there who ask as much as €250 an hour for installing a wood pellet system. The grants have driven the pricing completly daft.

    You're right!

Tip: If you ask for a quote don't tell that it's for a woodpeller boiler.
