    Oscar for worst CGI ever?

Looks a cool movie but that CGI was terrible.

As a big David Gemmell fan, this really tickled my interest... looks like a graphic novel. Spartan's are pretty damn cool.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 43,045 ✭✭✭✭Nevyn

It is based of a comic by Frank Miller not a Gemmell book.
    http://www.night-flight.com/fmiller/fmiller300.html

The comic is also title the 300.
Been a while from when I read it but the trailer looks good vs my recollections.

I think Rhyme meant its very reminscent of some Gemmell books.

Looking forward to it (despite the dodgy CGI) :)

Correct-a-mundo. Finished 3 of his books that refer to Sparta in them in the last month and that trailer really put me in mind of them... ill definitely go see it, even if the CGI is a load of toss.

Why is it being taken down? I'll definitetly go see it. I love all frank millers stuff, ever since i read his batman. This was a good comic, I'd say it'll be a pretty good film but i'll agree some of the cgi looks dire.

I like the bit when he shouts "RAAAARRGH!", and when he has a sword.

Looks interesting, but a major flaw with all these films (or graphic novel) based on the battle of Thermopylae, is that they always forget the 700 Thespians who also faught along side the Spartans to the last man :)

The Thespians deserve more credit tbh, the Spartans were soldiers picked with sons, who were sent out to either vicory of death, they couldnt retreat, the Thespians were civilian soldiers, their willingness to stay and die to the last man warrents far more merit than the professional Spartan soldiers, as the Thespians had a choice.

Y'know, I think it might be better to reserve judgement on the CGI for when you're not seeing some low-res iFilm movie. I think it looks awesome - exactly like the comic book. Dare I say it? Even more faithful to the comics than Sin City (there, I did dare say it).

Yeah this does look very good. Hopefully it'll be as good as Sin. Id say the reason the CGI looks so dodgy is due to colour - Sin City probably got away with it because it was more black and white...

Thought the trailer looked sh1te tbh.

That looked good, will look it up.

Looks good. A bit too much groinage for my tastes but there you go.

Not usually interested in the epic battle-types, but this caught my eye a couple of weeks ago when I saw pictures of it. Looking forward to it, not only because it's a Frank Miller story but because it's being directed by Zack Snyder (his sole film so far being the impressive Dawn of the Dead remake).

That's a historical quote so if you're saying that it's crappy scripting or something...

Is it just me or does the guy in the beard resemble Brian Blessed from Flash Gordon?

I think it looks fantastic, looks just like the comic (which is excellent by the way). You cant judge CGI on low res trailers. Even when you download full movies the CGI often looks dodgy. You have to see it on the big screen before you make your judgement!

Even with the dodgy CGI the trailer looks good so its on my To Watch list :)

While there is an element of truth in that, don't forget that the CGI in latest Superman still looked crap on the big screen. Hopefully this will be a step up from that.

Huh? The CGI in Superman Returns looked good. What film would be your current benchmark for CGI?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,780 ✭✭✭JohnK

I don't have any sort of benchmark other than just looking at it. The CGI in Superman looked very much like a computer game which I felt took a lot from the realism of the movie.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭Hugh Hefner

I can see how some of the set-pieces were "computer gamey" but I never saw any CGI that looked unrealistec or matte or anything like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,024 ✭✭✭✭Baggly

Maybe the type of CGI in this film is deliberate...You know, to kind of set it apart and make it visually different, in the way that Sin City was different, and House of flying daggers was different.

Trailer loked very average with a shockingly bad soundtrack. Ill go see it anyway because I love historical movies but it didnt tickle my interests that much

Music was Just Like You Imagined by Nine Inch Nails, taken from the album The Fragile. Not my favourite track from that and it didn't really fit well with the trailer. Still, I like the look of this.

I agree that some parts were good but at the same time there were some parts of it did look really fake to me. If I had it on DVD I'd direct you to some of the specific scenes but I dont think its been released yet.

This film is going to be amazing , Its shot using the same cgi method used in sin city BUT instead of cheap digital ( stupid rodriguez ) its shot on celluloid . The cgi is going to be a matter of taste ,but if the film ( early reviews have ranged from 4 - 5 stars ) lives up to the hype ...... then god help us all .

That is a superbly crafted trailer. Visuals, music, pacing all superb.

Looking forward to the film now.
