What are my rights as a Worker?

Hi, im a Student and working Part Time, I work for a Market Research Company in Dublin 4 and have been doing so since June 2005. I get paid weekly, for an agreed amount per hour, and when I started the job i didnt not sign a contract with the company, however, I did sign a contract agreeing to general working conditions (no mobile phones when im working, call in to confirm shifts, hours of shifts and general 'house rules' if you like)

Saturday shifts run from 11 to 6, and this morning I turned up for work just as I have done for the past year and a bit, only to find the cleaner locking up the building and no sign of any other worker. Having sent my boss an email last Monday, she had confirmed that I would be working this morning, and I had not heard from either her or anyone else via any medium since then. For this reason, I had no reason to believe the shift was not running, since I had not been asked to ring and confirm this or contact her for any reason.

Bottom line, the shift wasnt running, and I was very upset to find after making my way into work there was no work. Not only that, but I had made no other plans for the entire day, and my entire day was geared towards this shift. it was my only shift of the week, and 6.5hours means that I loose out on almost 70Euro, and I wont have any of that money next week. I waited around until 11.05am, and then left, trying twice to contact my supervisor to no avail.

What rights do I have as a worker, can I demand a full rembursement of my wage, where do I stand? I was the only person affected by this but the cleaner has said he will verify my presence at the job, i have a bus ticket to confirm i got the bus in ample time, and I still have the original email from my job which says 'i have put you down for Saturday'

Any advice you could give would be well apprichated because right now the way I feel I could quit my job over this.
