Placements in 1st year are 13weeks long, 4weeks and then 9weeks, pick from michaels, vincents or the mater. Hand in the form ASAP (when you get it) as it's 1st come 1st serve.
The placements in 1st year are usually in various wards e.g my gf was unlucky enough to get the infectious diseases ward:D some other , smaller hospitals are attached to the big ones, i.e some people who were assigned to the mater did a placement in cappagh hospital also.

1st year placements take place in second semester.
2nd year placements are in specialist areas like pediatrics and community nursing etc. so gives you a chance to see would you like something like that.

You also do some biochem and pharmacology in second year but don't worry it's fairly easy.

1st and 2nd years also have every friday off in semester one going by the timetable for the last two years, hours about 16-20 a week so not very much, placements are tough though depending where you live, where you've to go, so choose wisely with which hospital you pick as you'll be assigned to it for the 4 years.

    hope that helps
