File recovery software question

Managed to lose alot of family photos when the the partiton they were stored on got corrupted:o . I tried using a copy of ontrack I had but it kept causing xp to say it had a problem and would need to shut down the program. So in the end I ended up using a piece of software called "recover my files" which did indeed get my photos back. The only problem is each photo is now just named "recovered jpeg photo 1,2,3 etc etc. Even when I go into the properties of the photo it does'nt give me any info except when it was moddifed.
Where as when I used Ontrack I am nearly sure it retrieved the file with its original file name and date it was taken. ITs the "date it was taken" I am really after as I have quite a lot of photos of the kids at different stages and without knowing when the photo was taken I dont know what year/month folder to put them in. So can anyone confirm for me that ontrack or similar does indeed retrieve the lost file with original name and date created

    Thanks Cubix

Ontrack Easy Recovery Pro recovers both with name and without name (if RAW setting is used). The only (minor) problem I ever had with it is that it sometimes recovers multiple copies of the same file.

Have you tried using it directly from a boot diskette/CD?

Try getdataback. Its what I'm using at the moment. Before that, I was using @active file recovery.

Thanks for that Syco;) will see if I can get my hands on a copy, El Bastardo have tried the boot jobbies before as well and still run into problems. IF I can get it to work is Raw the best mode with file names ticked?

    Thanks

PMT can you remember if it gave you the original details of the file ie: name/size/date

    Thanks

Sorry, cant remember if it was handy recovery or data recovery  I think its data recovery, but i might be wrong. I tried about 10 progs before i got 1 that worked well. Try both. I got all my pics back with all details/ filenames etc.

    Try this 1st, 2nd 1 down: http://www.s2services.com/simpleundeletefreeware.htm
    Then try this 1: http://www.handyrecovery.com/

Some progs let you bring them back in 1 at a time, others let you see the file, but you had to pay for the prog to get them back. I found data recovery the best of about 10 that i tried.

Raw mode is a last resort. It ignores partition tables etc and gives sequential names to whatever it recovers. So, that's exactly what you DON'T want.

Just use the advanced recovery button and check that it's not in simple mode.

There's also stuff at http://www.x-ways.net which has a very good rep.

    2. Try using Final Data for recovering the files. Sometimes it works great.
