Display for Mac Pro

I'm going to buy a Mac Pro before the end of the year and I'm going to spend about 500 on a display. I'm not too concerned about getting a massive size. Around 19"-21" should do. I'm looking for good display quality (working in print design) and nice connection options (I have an Xbox 360 that I want to be able to hook it up to).

I've heard dell are good value.

    Any advice?

I bought a Formac for my PowerMac G5. It looks sweet and it's good quality. I got the ****** 19' for around €400 - €450. A bit pricey but it was worth it.

I would paste a link to it but their website doesn't seem to be responding at the moment. www.formac.co.uk

Would you be better off getting a CRT for design work? Old fashioned I know, but are flatscreens really up to it for good colour management?

If you're going with CRT, Mitsubishi are good monitors.

Actually, I may very well get a flatscreen when I get my MacBook Pro, so keep the info coming!

I got a 20" from Dell, 1600x1200 (not wide screen), and apart from 5 dead pixels and the fact that it looks ugly, I am happy with my purchase. I'd buy it again. Cost me about €500.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I posted this question on macrumors and got pointed to a great post on the topic: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=231339

I'm going to look into CRTs as the price on them is really good. I'll just have to live with the extra space they take up.

My other option is the 20" dell as Urban Weigl mentioned. They (unlike the larger dells) have the S-IPS panels (talked about in the link above) that are important for colour work.

If you're thinking in terms of colour accuracy and calibration, the Dell is the one to go for. I've had a long conversation with a guy who publishes a magazine and a good part of the time he's testing printers, papers and other products for photographers. This includes computers and monitors also, for which colour calibration and accuracy is vital for those printing their own work. He uses a Dell 24" himself.

I just bought two Dell 20" Widescreen (16:10) flat panels for 900 euro...

They use the same Samsung panels as the Apple 20" (but cost less) so i figure its a win win for all, except it does ruin the whole Apple silver/pro effect.

    I can live with that!

Dell's promo on the 20" widescreens ends tomorrow I think. I am using mine with a macbook, which is mainly a desktop computer for me. It's brilliant.
I would swap the 20" for a 24" anytime though.
Technically dells have the same LCD panels Apple uses for their displays.

DVI, VGA and USB (for the hub) cables come with the monitor. I had to get a mini DVI to DVI adapter. If Spectra says they have it backordered, you'll sooner and cheaper get it from US ebay. But I'm not sure minis need the adapter as well, possibly not.

I'm sure you'll enjoy the display. Just check it thoroughly and have them replace it until you're satisfied. They're not very well known for their QC.
2 of my friends had problems with initially shipped monitors. Mine was perfect from the beginning though, hopefully yours will be too.

Well got my 20 widescreen today and i am here in amazement at the picture quality.Fantastic, overjoyed with the purchase.

    Running at 1650 x 1080

Just set it up so i have my mac connected via DVI and pc connected via VGA. Can then switch between no prob.

Composite and s-video inputs are still available. Next step is to put CCTV security system on another input and then select PIP (pic in pic)..

Technology never ceases to amaze me. Highly recommended.

Lidl UK are selling 19" monitors that have VGA & DVI interfaces. Spec looks pretty good. All for £150 / €222:

The offer for the Samsung on Komplett looks fantastic. The Dell also uses the same Samsung panel, so there's no point paying extra for the Dell, especially as they both have 3 year warranties.
