Inspiron 1300 processor upgrade?

Just wondering is it possible to upgrade the processor in my inspiron 1300?
It has 1.6ghz Celeron M, and 512mb ram.
I'll probably upgrade the ram (anywhere cheap for a 1GB stick? Komplett are €150, seems a little steep).
Just wondering could I take out the 1.6ghz and put in another processor? Am I stuck to the celeron M range, what are the boundaries? Intel for a start I know, but have I options?
Would it be much hassle? Looked into the hardware end, seems easy enough according to the service manual. Processors aren't too bad off eBay.
    Thanks!
    Cian

Seems like a lot of hassle to upgrade the processor. Try 7dayshop.com, crucial.com/eu or shop4memory.com for the RAM though.

I know it could be done without much bother on an old vaio I had once it was the same family processor, just wondering does the same apply... I'll go for the ram at some stage anyway. Thanks

I upgraded my HP laptop from a Celeron processor to a P4. Both were desktop models, though, so it was literally a matter of dismantling the laptop, releasing the processor and inserting a new one.

It depends on how your Celeron is fixed to the motherboard. If it is slotted in, then in theory you should be able to put in another as long as the chipset supports it (I had loads of fun with this one). Of course if it is soldered in some way, then forget it.

Why would you bother? What are you doing that needs a faster CPU?

Use memoryc.com instead of Shop4Memory, it's the same people as far as I can see, but cheaper, but a fiver for postage.

    Photoshop, RAW & Dreamweaver.

Umm all CPU intensive. Well if your a heavy users of those then it might be worthwhile. You might be better selling it and buying a dual core 1300 from the outlet. How critical is waiting a minute or so?

I would have thought the gfx would be the bottleneck there for those games. Did the upgrade make much difference?

I notice a big difference in multi tasking with a dualcore, for me that was worth the extra when I was buying a lappy.

The graphics card was well able to handle HL2 and FIFA, but Doom 3 still looks a bit crappy. The processor upgrade made both games a hell of a lot more playable.

What gfx is it? Hardly the GMA950?

No, the ATI Radeon 9100. Getting old now, but does the job for the few games I want to play.

The pentium M 1300s are limited to a 400 Mhz FSB, I dont know if its really worth upgrading with that kind of a bottleneck and would a core duo even work?

Best off doing what some people mentioned, sell it and buy another. Those 1300 are designed more for entry level business apps rather than doom3.

Check the outlet for a nice 6400, good and cheap.

Hm bugger suspected as much. If I could get my money back on the current one and upgrade it'd be great (got it at a great price, and I've since de-crapified it)... Thanks for the advice!
