    What's involved in this?
Who do I've to talk to about it?

All I know is that I need 20sigs, and a member of staff on board, anything else I need to know?

I'm not sure about setting up a club, but for a society you need a committee (generally 4-5 people) and 20 people who've said they're willing to join. You'll also need a constitution which includes the aims and objectives for the club.

When you're happy with this, talk to Lisa Muldowny in the Clubs and Socs office. Then you need to mail it to scc@redbrick.dcu.ie so they can bring it up at their next meeting. It might help if you try to meet someone on the SCC before then so you can explain it to them in person.

If they're happy enough with it, you need to start work on a grant application which is basically a list of the things you plan to do this year and what money you'll need from the SCC to support that. You should talk to the SCC and possibly someone already on a club committee before you do that, it'll make life much easier.

I'm sure all this is on life.dcu.ie but I'm not sure where.

You need 20 sigs, and a member of staff to sign on as President.

Thats all you need to get your foot in the door.

I'd say you've not a hope in hades of getting it since guns are extremely dangerous and controlled items (i.e. will make the university extremely nervous about liability), you'll have to have a very strict constitution and clearly laid out details of what will and won't be allowed, both in terms of behaviour and the actual guns allowed (some dumbass may try bring something along that is illegal). Heck even the archery club (recurve bows are not controlled and are less dangerous than rifles) has had difficulties.
Still, worth a try, the fact that you've a possible location sorted, that is a proper gun club, will help.

UCD and Trinity both have clubs, so it's not a total dead duck from the offset.

Not any more, both the SPC and the SCC are making it slightly more difficult to set up a club/ society.

Its a known fact that the SCC are already finding it difficult to cover theirs costs as is.

For the current academic year there are 3 of last years clubs who are now societies. So that it eases the financial pressure of the SCC. And in the not to distant future will be meeting with clubs so to talk about how the SCC will move forward.

OP you need to talk to Lisa Muldowney as previously posted and she will give you all the necessary information on how to propse a club to the SCC committee.

    Bollox.

The Archery Club train onsite in the Gym, whereas a gun club would obviously have to practice on a range somewhere in town or in the suburbs. DCU would have little liability if something were to happen - they know this.

Put it like this. DCU would only be liable if something happened on site. Guns aren't dangerous, its the people who use them...

    True.

Although a temporary range that could be quickly set up and quickly taken apart could be used in the gym. It's actually a very safe sport, no accidents in the history of the state ;)

As it is a DCU sponsored club they would still be held responsible for the behaviour, and results of said behaviour, of it's members.

The average student is not the most trustworthy when it comes to judgement, how many of us piss away a fair chunk of our course in the bar and then wonder why we fail subjects?

I'm not saying I'm against setting up the club, just saying that I'd not hold my breath on it as Ireland is very much a gun-phobic state and the DCU SCC seem to often err on the cautious side. Anyway, good luck.

DURC has been run by students for almost 45 years now, on campus in TCD. Not one accident. Not one injury. Not even the TCD chess club can boast that (someone fell down the stairs coming out of the chess club a decade or so ago and broke something). DURC and UCDRC have said they'll help with the idea and have already provided sample club documents and the like. The National Target Shooting Association will also be drafting letters of support, because we happen to know phantom_lord and one of the other students setting up the club with him - PL has represented Ireland internationally in target shooting, and the other student is the Irish national air pistol champion. So there's enough technical expertise weighing in behind the proposal to ensure safety. Success should really boil down to whether or not the students join the club, so if you're interested, get in touch with PL and put your name down.

    Thanks Sparks :)

There's just a few things to be taken care of before the application goes in, one of which is finding and talking to thomas :D so if anyone wants to add their names and student number to the list of interested people , pm me or get in contact with me some way. Thanks!

It sounds like an intruiging idea for a new Club - if you do ever get it started, I'd be more than happy to join!

    Sign me up!

The easiest ways in Ireland to shoot at targets with guns for recreational purposes are to join a club with a range or join the FCA (now called RDF apparently) I did the latter for a few years, in hindsight I don't think it was worth it - not enough time for firing guns, and too much bulls**t.

If TCD and UCD students are competent enough to run rifle clubs it shouldn't be any bother for DCU students to do it either.

You should start preparing for the second clubs and socs day by putting up posters and getting organised in time.
