More jealous than disappointed to be honest. I've always wanted to walk around Dublin in a 40 foot diameter papier maché model of the planet Mercury, but my psychiatrist said it would probably be a bad idea.

Oh dear, the dance routine & the jugglers in the see through balls at the moment is absolutely brutal.

I've worked for MacTeo for ages (the company performing at the opening ceremony) on a lot of their big events, e.g. Special Olympics, Paddy's Days, Red Bull Air Race etc. and was truly surprised at the general crumminess of the opening ceremony. Just more of the same stuff! Need some fresh thinking!

Watched it, a bit hit and miss. The two singing in Irish and Donal Lunny's tunes were ok, the Spanish dude was ok as well, the last bit was a bit "cringe behind the couch".... but there is a sense of begorrah and bejaney about it... which to a lot of people, it doesn't reflect modern Ireland. A lot of people think that ceili music, "As Gaeilge" etc doesn't reflect them.

OP, to cure your embarrasment, how do you think Ireland should be presented to other nations?

Should have got Christy Moore and Moving Hearts types to rock the place
for about 20 minutes of so... thats if Christy wasn't carrying too much baggage to perform at such a place.

Ps they made a awful bollix of the introductions.... we never saw half of them.

Very poor in my opinion..... nearly at cringe level

Sharon ni Bheolan was excellent though ... did her best

    Poor you.

    Thanks for your understandind:rolleyes:

I just think people with facepaint in camp outfits doing "expressionist" dance has been done to death, and every time Ireland has a chance to showcase itself, it gets hijacked by artsy types with big notions and the result has been truly cringeworthy. It looked awful and the fact that the camera man couldn't find any of the famous names in the crowd as they were being listed just added to the amaturish effect of the whole thing.
I'm with you Archeron, forty foot heads for everyone:D

The music was ok but the dance was awful. At the sight of a muddy sole, I switched off. Bleurgh.

Two thoughts on the opening ceremony.
1: It must be remembered that prob 30% of worldwide audience is card carrying republicans/ so-called libertarians from the good'ol U S of Arse & basically this is the Sh******te they buy into from over the gulf (of ideology).
2: I also thought it was cringeworthy, change the record please.

We've seen the criticism, but I have yet to see what you would bring to the table. What would you do different??
