Copy Control

    Hey all,
Sorry if this is in the wrong place. I just got a cd off cd wow and it has a big sticker on it saying that it is 'Copy Control Restricted'. There was no indicator of this crap being on the cd when I bought it. Now, a search indicated that this is the same crap that Sony were installing.

What should I do here? I have an mp3 player which I obviously want to transfer it onto. Is this possible? Will crap get downloaded in the backround if I do play it on my pc?

    Cheers,
    Quad

If its the Sony software, try emailing CD Wow to see if they have a replacement policy so that you might get a newer disk that doesn't try to take over your computer.

There are various audio protections out there some are very easy to bypass and others are fairly nefarious like the Sony/BMG rootkit one.

I think I recall someone mentioning to me that AnyDVD now defeats most of these protections as well but I'm not sure.

Also try Easy CD-DA Extractor that works with a lot of discs I hear.

Last but not least have you tried simply putting the disc in stopping it autoplay and then rip it with any generic program like WMP/iTunes etc.

I think what p*sses me off most is that CDwow gave no indication on the site that this crap was on the product - which, apparently, cannot be classed as a cd - ""Copy Control discs cannot properly be referred to as CDs as the system introduces intentionally corrupted data, making the discs non-compliant with the Red Book standard for audio CDs."

So f*ck em. I mailed them giving out and told them that I wanted to return the product.

What CD? Just so we know to avoid it. Name and shame!

    Bjork: Greatest Hits by Polydor.

    Probably serves me right

edit: I just recieved this response from cd-wow (who, in all fairness, respond immediately)

    Hi

Thanks for your message. I'm sorry that the item is not exactly as
    expected.

Copy Protection has been introduced directly by the record companies as
    a
measure to help combat music piracy (which is ever more prominent).
Unfortunately this will affect genuine users who use audio equipment
    including MP3 players and similar.

Although we fully support a genuine consumer, I'm afraid we are at the
    peril
of the record companies who supply the product. They are extremely
reluctant to advise as to which titles are copy protected, which in
    turn,
makes it difficult for us to notify you.

We would be happy to have the item returned for a full refund, or an
exchange for another title of the same value, if you wish. If either
    of
these is an option, please return the item to the address below.
    Please
remember to include a covering note stating your name, email address,
    order
number, reason for return and action required (i.e refund or exchange -
    if
the latter, please also indicate the alternative title you require).

If you do return the CD then also send a note to Polydor and explain that you bought the CD but returned it because of their extremely un-secure copy protection methods. Tell them you'll never again purchase any music from them unless they review and change their methods.

It might not do much, but if everyone refused to buy these CDs then they would have to take notice. The record labels survive because people like you and me buy CDs. If we stop buying them, then they're pretty much screwed.
