TV just blew up

I recently posted about a problem I had with a satellite receiver. Some posters seemed to think the power unit had gone. Anyway I got a new receiver and everything was working fine for a couple of days but then my TV just went - there was a bit of bang and the screen went dead and now there is just a faint humming sound coming from the TV.

My wife tells me it happened as she hit a button on the Satellite receiver remote control. Is it possible that I am getting some kind of power surge from the satellite dish through the Sat receiver?

    No.
    Just co-incidence.

There is nothing likely a satellite receiver can do to make a TV blow up.

Was it a Philips made in 2003? My tube died 2 weeks ago brought it back and the shop talked to Philips and the shop says I get a brand new TV for 50 euro with 2 year guarantee.

It was a Mitsubishi Black Diamond 28" wide screen. Got it about 4 years ago second hand - reckon it's about 6-7 years old. Maybe it was co-incidence but I thought it stange that first my Sat receiver went then my TV.

Is it only possible to get a power surge through electrical sockets?

Indeed, power surge came to mind when I read the original post.

How many devices are plugged into the socket, and do you have many double adapters etc?

I have seperate sockets for the tv, dvd player and sat receiver. Should I use one of those surge protection extension leads and plug everything into it?

Only a UPS protects against a power surge that would damage equipment. The Surge Protector sockets are a waste and will rarely protect more than the filters etc built into all equipment with SMPS. Transformer driven and motorised gear is less sensitive. 100% useless to put a "surge protector" socket on them compared with 99.9999% useless for everything else.

Don't buy a Belkin UPS though. APS is good.
