General laptop maintenance

Just after buying a Dell Inspiron 9400 and wondering are there any things I need to know in relation to its general upkeep. For example, what are the dos and donts of charging the battery - is it advisable to charge it all at once rather than charging it for 20 minutes every time, or is it advisable to only charge it when the laptop is switched off?

And about cleaning the mousepad or whatever ya call the mouse on the laptop! What's the best way of keeping that clean without damaging it, cos I presume it's pretty fragile and any kinda scrath could be a pretty big deal?

And what about the laptop overheating? Already, even after only using it for half an hour, it's pretty hot on the underside of the laptop. Anything I can do to keep the thing cool?

Any hints or tips at all in relation to keeping a laptop in top shape are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Firstly on a new laptop...leave the protective plastic covers on the wrist pad area and anywhere else they maybe (If you haven't taken them off already).
I usually fully charge my battery then fully run it down a couple of times with a new laptop, even now I still do it on my everyday laptop...but sometimes thats just not possible so fully charge and empty the battery a couple of times, and then use as you like..as in my opinion its good practice...
Also buy a can of compressed air and keep those air vents n the back or side of your laptop dust free!
Some common sense and good house keeping and you'll be alright.
As for the touchpad being kept clean,I just use a lightly (lightly!) damp cloth to give it a wipe now and then...and an immediate dry after of course!(And all of this when the units off!)

It's running down the battery once a month.

Laptops do run hot. Have a look at the power supply. A soldering iron is usually about 15 Watts for comparison.

I just use a microfiber cloth that I got at a camera shop or those 3M notebook cleaning wipes do the trick.
