Asterisk zapata/zaptel conf files

    I'm trying to help a friend set up an Asterisk box in his office and I'm having difficulties getting a Digium TE110P configured to work with their newly installed Fractional ISDN line.

    I've had Digium Support in for a look and they reckon it's a config problem.

    It would be very helpful if I could get a look at the zaptel.conf and zapata.conf files from a working ISDN installation (my experience with zaptel and zapata is limited to getting the Digium Dev Kit working).

    If someone has zaptel/zapata conf files specifically for an FRA that would be great but any working config would be very helpful.

    Regards,

    Liam

    let us know who you are with, is it eircom? a primary rate? is crc4 on or off? you have to configure all the channels even if it's a fra. Anyway answer the q's ill post you a config.
    zaptel should look like this with crc off

    loadzone = uk
    defaultzone = uk

    span=1,1,0,ccs,hdb3
    bchan=1-15
    dchan=16
    bchan=17-31

    or this with crc on

    loadzone = uk
    defaultzone = uk

    span=1,1,0,ccs,hdb3,crc4
    bchan=1-15
    dchan=16
    bchan=17-31

    zaptel.conf shoudl look like this for a pri with 15 channels

    [trunkgroups]

    [channels]

    language=en
    internationalprefix = 00
    nationalprefix = 0
    context=from-pstn
    switchtype=euroisdn
    pridialplan=local
    priindication=outofband
    usecallerid=yes
    hidecallerid=no
    callwaiting=yes
    usecallingpres=yes
    callwaitingcallerid=yes
    threewaycalling=yes
    transfer=yes
    cancallforward=yes
    callreturn=yes
    group=1
    callgroup=0
    pickupgroup=0
    immediate=no
    echotraining=yes
    echocancel=yes
    echocancelwhenbridged=no
    facilityenable=yes
    musiconhold=default
    overlapdial=yes
    immediate=no
    txgain=0.0
    rxgain=0.0
    signalling = pri_cpe
    channel => 1-15
    channel => 17-31

    though zaptel.conf will vary depending on your needs, you probably dont want overlap dialling, you might want pri indication inband.
    Also do you have ring and tip done correctly on your cable? especially if you need a crossover E1 cable you know it's not the same as an ethernet cross over cable, the wiring is different. Pm me if you need more pointers.

    Hi,

    Many thanks for your response to my query.

    In answer to the questions you asked :
    1. Eircom is the provider.
    2. It's a Fractional Rate
    3. crc? I'm hoping to find out tomorrow.

    Thanks for the configs. They look very similar to mine. I'm going to do a line by line comparison tomorrow.

    It hadn't occured to me that I might need a cross-over cable.It also didn't occur to me that the wiring might be different to CAT5, but I found a site with the wiring - pretty straighforward. Thanks for the tip.

    I do have a dumb question. The terminating RJ45 jack was plugged into a terminating unit. I assumed that this unit was there for the purposes of testing the line and I unplugged the RJ45 jack and plugged it directly into the TE110P. This is the correct thing to do, is it? Or have I removed a necessary piece of equipment from the equation?

    Thanks again for your help.

    Regards,

    Liam

    sounds like youve made a big mistake, was it a tellabs or martis or other brand box? with status lights on it plugged into the mains? thats your CPE from eircom, if it's one of the newer ones it should have, looking at the back, starting from the left, what looks like a serial connection nine pin labeled 120ohm then two little coax connectors labled 75 ohm, either of these present your pri to you, the next two sockets are the line which the line from teh wall should be plugged into and another loop through socket for testing. When it was installed you would have specified 120 ohm or 75 ohm, you need 120 ohm for that digium card, so they would give you an adaptor that converts that 9 pin serial like socket to an rj48 (same as rj45) which you owuld run straight to your digium card, if you ticked the 75ohm box they would have given you a set of coax leads, and your going to need a 75ohm to 120ohm balun to get back to rj45 from your coax. You need to dig out your primary rate order form.
    The eircom box converts whatever way they sent the line upto you (usually HDSL) back into your 2mb hdlc circuit with your PRI presented on it, trouble is that pair could have had upto 50 or 100 volts on it so hopefully you havent fried your primary rate card.
    Can you give us some pictures of what you have.

    I don't have physical access to the site at the moment so I can't post any pics. However, I spoke to someone on-site and, as you correctly guessed, it's a Tellabs 8110 with the ports that you mentioned.

    I'm trying to get a copy of the order in order to move this along.

    I'm also trying to contact their account manager who, so far, has either been on holidays or sick.

    From the information that I've been given, it appears that no leads or adaptor was supplied by the installing technician. Indeed, their customer said that the tech told them that we could take the lead from the Tellabs box and plug it straight into our equipment. Now, that's 2nd hand information as I didn't talk to the tech, so I don't want to point any accusing fingers.

    The upside is that I don't believe the TE110P is damaged as it's talking to zttool.

    When I have more information from the site and Eircom I'll be able to make some more progress. In the meantime, however, thanks again for your help and all the information.

    I'll update this thread with my progress to keep you informed.

    Regards,

    Liam

    Hurray!

    An adapter had, in fact, been supplied. A little tricking around with zaptel.conf and they're now receiving calls.

    I'm back on familiar territory with the remainder of the configuration and can take it from here.

    Many thanks for your assistance, sirlinux.
