Everyone I know who has been to San Diego or Chicago on a J1 has absolutely loved it. That said, Australia and New Zealand would be a bit different, and could be worth a go. Either way, you're bound to meet lots of Irish and have good craic.

if you're just going for a summer - go J1 and go to Chicago (my personal recommendation - I'd live there tomo if I could)

I'd leave Oz/NZ until you have you have a year or two to spend because there is just so much to see.

The above is exactly what I've done/doing I went to Chicago on J1 in 2002 and am off to Oz now in October.

Another reason for J1 first is because you don't need that much going with you. To get an Oz visa you need an Oz bank account with 5000 australian dollars in it which is 3300. Start small (J1 - skip over the atlantic) and work up (Round the world)

What does the 1 in J1 stand for? Once in a lifetime.

There's a reason students go to the US when in college.
Never again in your life will you be offered a short term working visa so easily to the states.
You only get one chance at it (while in college .. or two chances if you're lucky). You might think college will never end but trust me it does.

I got my J1 in my final year and would move back in a heart beat. Alas, the US will not take me without a visa. I have no joy of a J1 and so must await the green card lottery (2 chance there.. slim and none).

As for Aus.. the same visa applies no matter what age you are. Its the same process whether youre in college or not.

So unless you want to lose the chance forever I would go to the States. Even if you are in 2nd or 3rd year it gives you a chance to apply for the J2 next year if you really love it there.
And then when you finish college and manage to save enough money to get you to Aus then you can apply for the visa.

Anything else would be just crazy:eek:

they usually dont bother looking for proof of funds! they didnt check me anyway

if in college defin do the J1, oz is still available till your 30 and u need at lst a year to do it properly
