Help playing DVD's

On my new pc (built myself) i can't play DVD's.
I've got a new BenQ DVD/R and it came w/ no bundled software DVD players.
So i've downloaded VLC Player which is generally quite good.
However when i try to play a DVD it comes out with artefacts onscreen and the sound is choppy, basically plays sorta scuttery.
There is nothing else wrong with the drive itself, plays DVD games just fine, can burn CD's...haven't tried burning a DVD yet.
    But anyway, first things first.

I've installed "InterActual Player" off another DVD but when i try to play DVD's it gives me an error: "Playback failed due to a problem with the video subsystem".
Also Windows Media Player doesn't work.
It says "WMP cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer"

What can i do to get DVD's working?

Try downloading a trial version of Intervideo or PowerDVD and see if they make any difference.
