Self Drive in South Africa - Advice?

    Hi,

Me and the Girlfriend are going to South Africa in November. We're thinking of driving up from Capetown to Port Elizabeth.

Has anyone done anything like this before in South Africa? I've heard there's a lot of Car-jacking, and that it can be quite dangerous if travelling on your own (as in not with a group).

    Thanks,

    K.

beware of the puncture trick.... happened to myself and three guys in Zim...

Apparently they target hire cars ...nick the tyre so that it slowly deflates ...hopefully for them out in the bush... they then swarm around, ostensibly trying to help and rob whatever they can....

Robbed a bag from us ..luckily not much in it.

Don't let it put you off though.......

    Thanks for those!

Most of our time will be spent in Cape Town and travelling up to Port Elizabeth. We fly to J'burg from there, and then back to Dublin.

We've heard great things about Kariega Park, so we'll be spending a couple of nights there also.

    Hi k,

You will have a great time. myself and the missus did it a few years back for the honeymoon. Capetown is fantastic loads to do. The drive up to PE is really nice. When you go through Tsitsikamma check out the worlds highest bungee jump, also up near PE theres a park called Ado Elephant park, you drive your own car around lots of wildlife right outside your window nad as the name suggests lots of elephants. As Irish G says watch out for speed traps I got done twice. There is no real problem in that area regarding car jacks anymore.
