076 numbers and the Civil Service

After using a couple of different softphones with varying degrees of success, I recently picked up a BudgeTone 101 to try out. I had no difficulty configuring it to dial out using VoIPStunt, and in reconfiguring it to accept calls using Freespeech. (Either/or, unfortunately - if there's a way to get it to do both at the same time, I can't figure it out).

I decided to leave it in freespeech mode for incoming calls at the moment, so that people can call me without paying for mobile calls. Today I got a call from one of my friends who works in the Civil Service, who said that she wasn't able to call the 076 freespeech number from the phone in the office. (She deals with the public all the time, so can dial most numbers - I forgot to ask whether she can call mobiles).

So it sounds as though whoever is managing the phone network in at least some Government departments (Finance, in this case), hasn't updated their dial-plan to take account of the non-geographic 076 numbers.

That might be something to be aware of if you're adopting an 076 number.

I think some of the telco's have been slow to add them. I.E. eircom, bt, smart. I know at the begining I couldn't dial my smart 076 number from by BT line.
