A mates PC powers off randomly. It just goes completely dead. no warning. It just gets a black screen and all is gone and a reboot starts. Any suggestion on what to start checking for?
    Thanks in advance

Its not a Dell, by any chance is it? I know the GX270's had a problem like this where a burned out capacitor on the motherboard caused the macine to restart randomly.

If not, check the mobo anyway. Also, if you can, try swapping out the power supply for a spare, it could be the PSU on the way out.

It could be the power supply about to fail like aidan suggested. It could also be something overheating, look for dust and make sure the fans are running okay.

Wait are you saying its restarting itself or its powering off and you then have to turn it back on?

If its restarting then chances are you are getting a blue screen but by default windows 2k/xp does not show it and just restarts. firstly go in to system properties, advanced, startup and untick auto reboot.

secondly open event viewer and look for an error at the time it happened that might give you an indication of what happened.

If its turning off completely then its more likely hardware.

it's not a dell. a no name pc.
there is no dust in or around the system.
the PC reboots rather than powers off.

I'm getting the PC dropped over here in the next hour so i'll try suggested comments then and swapmatics and post back.

    Cheers

just getting around to this now. I've disable the reboot option and hey presto theirs the blue screen. So it looks like a software issue.
Loads of mumbo jumbo on the blue screen.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL *(this looks like the important part) has it got something to do with IRQ's

Anyone shed some light on where to start looking
