havent really time to go into too much detail but the basics are:

    1. select the item that you want to keep in colour i.e. the roses. ou can use a mask to select the roses or any of the select tools.
    2. Invert the selection - this will select everything else.
    3. Perform the B&W conversion on everything except the roses.

This is a quick how to in 10 seconds...you can complicate it as much as you want but this is the basics..

I find ya can just highlight the bouquet, right click and copy as new layer, then you have both as layers to play around with, adjusting saturation, contrast etc..

An alternative to the above (which will give you a very crisp coloured transition from B&W to colour) is to download Picasa2 from Google and use its Focal B&W effect which fades out colour in a feathering way from a focal point. Might be more what you are looking for, I dunno.

    DeV.

    Simplest way:

    Zoom into the area.

Select Lasso, feather of 15 - 20, depending on how big the original file size is.

Lasso the flower, and whichever else you want to remain in colour. Be as accurate as possible.

Go to select at the top of the page.

    Click inverse selection.

    Image/desaturate.

    Done. :)

    this is what i got

    6034073
    workflow:
    duplicate layer
isolate flowers, in this case i drew around them with the eraser, but the lasso tool would do as well, then cleared the rest of the layer leaving just the flowers
with the colour layer (flowers) active choose layer matting defringe.
desaturate (shift Ctl U) the original layer or if you have a action or plugin use that
I ran the image through neat image to cut down some of the noise and resiezed it a little
oh and there was a spot on the man's jacket that i cloned out!!!
    hope that helps :)

Not really, the link doesn't work :p

I did a quick one too but it looks identical to sinecurea's. I used Channel Mixer/monochrome. Generally works better than desaturate, although not very much with this image.

Fionn's link is working fine for me, nice work too.

    How bizarre. I get:

Quickest way to do it is the following

    Desaturate the whole image
    Zoom in on the flowers
    Select the History Brush
Start bringing the flowers back to life ;)

oh i forgot to add i put an orange filter on the B&W layer to give it some boost in brightness without blowing out details

I use the "Color Range" option from the "Select" menu. I'm not sure if it is PS7, though. The tool lets you choose a range of colors and gives you a nice little preview so you don't have to work with brushes/lassos/whatevers. If you draw a loop around the basic outline of the roses, it'll work even better. After you've got what you want selected, jump it to a new layer, then make the old layer b&w. The new layer (on top) should remain colored. If you want the green, too, you'll have to do 2 color selections/jumps to new layer.

That filter really does give the image a boost, nicely done Fionn.

Any sign of the Photoshop sub-forum. Good stuff 126. Thanks 99. (If you're old enough to get that one ;))
