I'd consider migrating to a different e-mail address. BT have been anxious to dump the Oceanfree service for years.

I dumped mine ages ago as they were making no attempts to stop the tide of spam into my account. Not to mention that their webmail is rubbish and the quota is miserable.

Ah good old Oceanfree, those were the days.

The dark age days of pay-per-minute dial up you mean!

Oceanfree eh!! Ah that brings me back, I had one in college IIR

Get yourself a gmail account, and you'll never look back.

In those words.....yes, but fond memories nonetheless.

Yeah, it's gone for me too. I've tried looking up their IP addresses etc but they seem to have disappeared from the DNS servers.

I could really do with that address working at least til I migrate to a new address. Do you think it'll come back up? This happened for a day or two in May also.

    Dave.

Yeah it's a bit annoying alright, I use my oceanfree email addresses for shopping/ebay type stuff, and it's a pain in the hole the past few days without it.

according to www.dnsstuff.com, the mail server associated with the mx record for oceanfree.net is currently timing out ... so no dns responses, and no mail routing is taking place

wonder if many people still use this service ?

i agree with the silas fella ... time to get a gmail account and move on ... sure google will take over the world eventually, we may as well get on board the love train now;)

smtp.oceanfree.net is still working though, because I use it as my smtp on Thunderbird, and all my other accounts are sending mail through it with no problems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,957 ✭✭✭trout

tried that too ... smtp.oceanfree.net still fails to resolve for me ...

Searching for smtp.oceanfree.net MX record at ns1.oceanfree.net. [212.2.162.1]: Timed out. Trying again.
Searching for smtp.oceanfree.net MX record at ns2.oceanfree.net. [212.2.162.2]: Timed out. Trying again.

    why would that be ?

The first day in a long time where I haven't been offered penis enlargements, stock quotes, must-read info on get rich quick schemes and requests from various bogus banks to provide them with details of accounts I haven't got - great!

Still down this morning, I use this for work ! was off for past 2 weeks badly need to get access!!

Oceanfree's incoming mail server (mail.oceanfree.net) seamed to be back working between 8 am to 9.
Therefore if you are waiting on urgent mail I recommend keeping outlook open and you should be able to retrieve some mail even if it’s intermittingly on/off line,
It also appears like the technical team hasn’t fully restored the service on the web site, as that’s still down.

God love them, at least there trying.

But these guys (IOL) gave us unlimited off-peak dial-up for £20 a month, when Eircom wouldn't :D

Until, of course, they cut off high-usage users of a supposedly unlimited usage service.

Oceanfree were the first dialup provider in Ireland without subscription fees. IIRC they were also the first to provide 128k ISDN connections without requiring a subscription account. With STAC compression and good connectivity they were the gamers' ISP of choice for a while.

Beelzebub: If you're still having problems...
Is your email client using 'pop.oceanfree.net' for POP3?
Which DNS servers are you using (or who is your ISP)?

My oceanfree email has never had problems ever since i joined back when they first came on the scene...

i do however have issues with smtp settings in Mozillas Thunderbird.... anyone know a way around this....maybe its just server issues today?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭Pet

Is the POP3 server still down? mail.oceanfree.net still isn't working for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,399 ✭✭✭OFDM

Has anyone had success since connecting to oceanfree? - I'm getting "Cannot login to host (pop.oceanfree.net:110)" errors on the webmail and re-authentication errors when trying to connect to the POP3 server with Thunderbird.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,593 ✭✭✭Soundman

No problems logging in. My Dad has Oceanfree despite my efforts at getting him to use Gmail. The only problem he does have is the unbelievable amount of spam he gets each day. In excess of 100 emails, all spam.

I'm still get the can't connect to pop.oceanfree.net error. Could it be that they're blocking access from Digiweb users?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,065 ✭✭✭Snowbat

Probably not on purpose - I'd guess either an obsolete DNS record or a routing issue at Digiweb or Esat.

If you're running Linux, install the tcptraceroute package and post the output of the following:
    /usr/bin/nslookup pop.oceanfree.net
    /usr/sbin/tcptraceroute pop.oceanfree.net 110

If you're running XP, post the output of the following ( How to copy text from a command prompt):
    nslookup pop.oceanfree.net
    tracert pop.oceanfree.net

XP is less useful for this as tracert uses ICMP (Esat seem to be blocking ICMP echo requests at some of their routers) but it will give some clues.

It looks like some of my oceanfree account have been deleted! I had four, discovered one's still working, but the others come back as "user does not exist" if I send an email to them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,462 ✭✭✭Peanut

Apologies for digging up an old thread :o, but if anyone needs to free up space/get a backup of their oceanfree webmail downloaded into a standard mail app./migrate the mails to somewhere else, you can now do this, thread is here
    thanks

where were you five years ago!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,462 ✭✭✭Peanut

lol.. yeah it's a bit late, but.. I still use my oceanfree webmail for some stuff, and it wasn't until recently that I got to the point of complete despair with it & the 4meg quota.. (just moderate annoyance before that :-p)

Also would be curious to know if there are many people using Eircom webmail. I reckon there should still be a good few.
