A friend of mine just moved to Ireland and wants to get broadband, but he hasn't yet a phoneline in his house. Does he has to go to eircom first, get a landline and then switch to another provider or can he go directly to another provider and get the line set up by them without going to eircom first.
Does anyone know, how long it takes, to get it set up if he has to go to eircom first?

Chorus broadband doesn't require a telephone line. Just that yur in their area. Go to chorus.ie to check. Go to callcost.ie and u might be able to find some other too.

If they need a phoneline, they need to get it from eircom. (www.eircom.ie - Products & Services - Phonelines)

They don't have to get their broadband from eircom, and they don't have to get their broadband over the phoneline. Depending on the area they live in, wireless or cable broadband may also be available. See http://broadband.gov.ie for some of the options.
