Is the screen plugged... in... oooh.....

:D It wouldn't be screen brightness I'm guessing, either. Guessing your LCD screen just - died.

Do you hear the Mac Bong startup chime ? Did this machine work in the recent past ? Has someone been fiddling about with it ?

try booting off the installation DVD - if your LCD fires up, then your problem is software or disk related, otherwise your LCD is possibly broken.

Is this one of the new flat panel iMacs? I wonder if there's a fuse somewhere inside...

this is generally a logic board problem if you pm me the serial number i will check if its still under warranty, there were two problems that caused a blank screen either the powersupply or the logic board and as you can hear it churning i reckon its the logic board, also as an aside you could reset the pRam by holding apple-alt-p-r together as you start the machine and hold them down until it chimes twice.
